Upcoming Releases, August 2024

We've made it to August, the last of the full summer months. There are some big releases and, as has been typical of the rest of 2024, some notable horror films are coming. Let's dive in and see what awaits us in August.

Friday, August 2:
Harold and the Purple Crayon (Theaters):
Zachary Levi takes the lead in this film about an animated figure brought to life through his magic, purple crayon. I don't know what to think of the film, but it could be some family-friendly entertainment.

Trap (Theaters): This one from M. Night Shymalan features Josh Hartnett as a loving father taking his daughter to a concert. There is, of course, a twist. The twist is given away in the trailer, and I think it could make for a fascinating journey.

Thursday, August 8:
One Fast Move (Prime Video):
This one features K.J. Apa as a dishonorably discharged soldier seeking out his father to get into the world of motorcycle racing. I don't know about this.

Friday, August 9:
Borderlands (Theaters):
This new feature film comes from Eli Roth, but it's an action-packed based on the video-game series of the same name. It's got a great cast and a really fun trailer. I think this could be one of the better entries of late summer.

It Ends With Us (Theaters): This is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, featuring Blake Lively in the lead role. I loved the trailer and I love the potential of this film.

Cuckoo (Theaters): It's been a great year for horror films. This one features Dan Stevens and Hunter Schafer in a trailer that looks like a lot of fun. What's the twist? Will it work? I have some decently high hopes.

The Instigators (Apple TV+): This one comes from Doug Liman and features Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as a pair of thieves on the run. This should be a fun streaming film and could be a nice feature for the late summer.

Thursday, August 15:
Jackpot (Prime Video):
This comedy features a unique concept out of a horror movie. A woman wins the lottery but has to survive the night to claim her prize. Awkwafina and John Cena are among the cast, and this could have some good potential.

Friday, August 16:
Alien: Romulus (Theaters):
From director Fede Alvarez, this is a new Alien adventure starring Cailee Spaeny. This looks like a return to the classic form for the franchise, and could be the most frightening since the 1979 original.

The Union (Netflix): Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry take the lead in this action adventure for Netflix. It looks like a good blend of action and comedy and could be a nice late summer hit for Netflix.

Friday, August 23:
The Crow (Theaters):
Delayed from earlier in the summer, this is a re-boot of the franchise, this time with Bill Skarsgaard. It looks like an interesting take on the story and part of a big year for the star.

Blink Twice (Theaters): This is another horror film, this one set on a remote island and featuring Channing Tatum. It comes from director Zoe Kravitz and features a pretty compelling trailer.

Friday, August 30:
Afraid (Theaters):
Another horror film, this one features John Cho as the head of a family invited to test the latest in A.I. innovations. This has an interesting premise and could be intriguing.

Reagan (Theaters): It's an election year, so naturally we get a biopic about the former President, this one starring Dennis Quaid as the iconic actor turned Governor turned President. I'm curious to see how it goes.
