Upcoming Releases, October 2024

While the Spooky Season kicks off in September, we get it going full blast in October. We also have some blockbusters and potential award contenders. In short, it's a packed month. Let's dive in.

Thursday, October 3:
* Hold Your Breath (Hulu):
This first Thursday presents a trio of horror releases on streaming, beginning with this one set during the Dust Bowl in 1930s Oklahoma. Looks intriguing and a different kind of premise.

* Salem's Lot (Max): We've seen this Stephen King novel adapted before. Now, we get a modern adaptation that drops on streaming to help kick off October. This is a must for fans of King's books.

* House of Spoils (Prime Video): Opening a restaurant is tough, but doing it while battling Ghosts is a nightmare. That's the plot here in this new spooky release for Prime Video starring Ariana Dubose.

Friday, October 4:
* Joker: Folie a Deux (Theaters):
This is the follow up to the 2019 film that saw Joaquin Phoenix win an Academy Award. This time it's a musical and co-stars Lady Gaga. This will be a huge release and potential award contender.

* Whitebird (Theaters): This one is a follow up to Wonder, though that connection has been dropped from the marketing. It's been long-delayed but features Helen Mirren and a World War II story. It could be interesting.

* The Platform 2 (Netflix): This is a sequel to the somewhat unique and popular horror film. It's ideally timed to help kick off October.

Thursday, October 10:
* Caddo Lake (Max):
Max keeps turning out horror films to kick off October, now offering this one featuring Dylan O'Brien and centering on a series of mysterious deaths and disappearances. The trailer looks engaging enough.

Friday, October 11:
* Saturday Night (Theaters):
Jason Reitman writes and directs a biopic on the first episode of Saturday Night Live. I love Reitman's films and I'm excited to check this out.

* Piece By Piece (Theaters): This one is a different kind of biopic. Morgan Neville, a great documentarian, brings the story of Pharell Williams to life using Legos. It looks fun.

* Terrifier 3 (Theaters): The third film in a creepy horror franchise. I didn't watch the first two and I think I'll safely skip this blood bath as well.

* Lonely Planet (Netflix): This one finds Laura Dern as a writer who heads to Morocco to cure her writers' block. There she meets a man (Liam Hemsworth) and begins an affair. A romance for those looking for counter-programming.

* Last of the Sea Women (Apple TV+): A documentary about older Ocean Warriors trying to better the world. It looks engaging and inspirational.

Thursday, October 17:
* Brothers (Prime Video):
Josh Brolin plays a reformed criminal trying to go straight who reunites with his twin brother (Peter Dinklage). This looks like a fun and somewhat wild action comedy.

Friday, October 18:
* Smile 2 (Theaters):
This is a sequel to the mild hit from a few years back. The trailer does little to build my enthusiasm, but 'tis the season, I guess.

* Goodrich (Theaters): This is a parenting comedy/drama starring Michael Keaton. He's having a moment of late, and I love Keaton, but I'm not sold this will be great. We'll see.

* Woman of the Hour (Netflix): Anna Kendrick takes the lead in this murder mystery set in the 1970s at The Dating Game. I love Kendrick and I love the premise. This could be a fun gem in October.

Thursday, October 24:
* Canary Black (Prime Video):
Kate Beckinsale takes the lead as a CIA Agent in this action adventure. It looks like it might be engaging and some fun.

Friday, October 25:
* Venom: The Last Dance (Theaters):
The third (and final?) installment of the franchise starring Tom Hardy. These haven't been my favorite, but the trailer for this one looks more fun than the past two.

* Conclave (Theaters): This one could be in limited release, but it's a religious thriller drama set around the selection of a new Pope. The trailers look great for this one.

Wednesday, October 30:
* Time Cut (Netflix):
Madison Bailey takes the lead in this drama about a woman going back in time to stop a serial killer. We've seen a film about a time-traveling killer before, so I'm a bit skeptical.

Thursday, October 31:
* Mr. Crocket (Hulu)
: Set in 1993, a Children's Host comes out of the television to kidnap children, killing parents in the process. When a new victim goes missing, a determined parent sets out to find them. Must be a special Halloween release...
