Upcoming Releases, December 2024
We're into the final month of 2024. That means a lot of big holiday releases and some films that will be fighting for Best Picture. Let's dive in!
Friday, December 6:
Y2K (Theaters): What if the Y2K fears were proven right? This new horror comedy takes things back to December 31, 1999 and imagines that our worst fears come true. Can a group of teens survive? This looks like a fun way to kick off the month.
The Order (Theaters): This could be in limited release but it's a drama with a very interesting premise. It features a good cast, led by Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, and a story that feels very timely. I'm intrigued.
Night Bitch (Theaters): Another film that's in limited, this one features Amy Adams in a role as a stressed and tired mother who feels some changes coming. It's an interesting premise that looks like a potentially engaging film.
Mary (Netflix): This timely biopic sees the world though the eyes of Mary, the young girl who would become Mother to Jesus Christ. This faith-based film should be a big hit during the Advent season.
Wednesday, December 11:
Maria (Netflix): This is one of the biggest releases of the year for the streamer, and one that has generated Oscar buzz for Angelina Jolie. This figures to be a must-see December offering for the streamer.
Friday, December 13:
Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim (Theaters): The latest from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien is an animated feature that takes place during the time documented in the Simarilion. This will be an interesting blockbuster offering for fans.
Kraven the Hunter (Theaters): The third of Sony's non-Spider-Man Marvel films releasing this year, this one has been delayed a few times. The trailers don't look great, so it's hard to hold out much hope. We'll see.
September 5 (Theaters): This one is getting a wider release beginning this week. It's a drama set behind the scenes with the sports coverage team at the 1972 Olympics when violence broke out at the games. It looks like a good and tense journalism drama.
Carry On (Netflix): This one sees Taron Egerton as a TSA agent being blackmailed into putting a sketchy package on a plane on Christmas Eve. This thriller looks like a bit of interesting December viewing.
Friday, December 20:
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Theaters): This family-friendly blockbuster franchise just keeps on rolling. Sonic and his pals are back, as is Jim Carrey. It's deep as a puddle, but it should be fun for everyone.
Mufasa: The Lion King (Theaters): This one is a prequel to the classic Disney animated film. It comes from Barry Jenkins and tells the story of his father and uncle, Scar. It looks like a fun one for families, too.
Homestead (Theaters): This is a smaller action film being released near the end of the year. For those who are looking for something a bit more up tempo, this will likely hit the spot.
Six Triple Eight (Netflix): This one tells the story of the only all Black unit in World War II. It's an inspiring true story that will be a film worth seeking out to end the year.
Wednesday, December 25:
Nosferatu (Theaters): This new take on the classic tale comes from Director Robert Eggers. It looks like one of the most stylish and most impressive films of the year.
Baby Girl (Theaters): Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson play a game of cat-and-mouse thanks to an illicit affair in this one. It looks steamy and dramatic, but probably not safe for the family.
The Fire Inside (Theaters/Prime Video): This story from Amazon/MGM Studios tells the true story of boxer Claressa T-Rex Shields who came from Flint Michigan to win a Gold Medal in boxing. It looks like some inspiring Christmas Day fare.
A Complete Unknown (Theaters): This one finds Timothy Chalamet as iconic music legend Bob Dylan, showing his rise to fame in the 1960s. This has a good look and an intriguing story that should make for an interesting watch.
