1994 Rewind, The Shawshank Redemption

Films released in 1994 will turn 30 this year. Over the next few months, I'll be looking at some of the memorable films from that year, including some of my favorites. Today, it's an incredible drama.

Red: [narrating] Sometimes it makes me sad, though... Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

The Shawshank Redemption
Starring:
Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
Director: Frank Darabont
About: This film is based on a short story from Stephen King. It's a beautiful story of friendship and hope in the midst of darkness. The performances from Robbins and Freeman are beautiful, as is the story of Red and Andy. I love the way Darabont tells this story and all its beats. It didn't win Best Picture, but it remains my favorite film of 1994 and one of my favorite films of all time. There's a reason it's been consistently among the highest rated films on Internet Movie Database. It's well worth seeking out if you've never had a chance to see it. It's a tough watch at times but it ends in a beautiful place.
