Best of 2024, TV Series

Today, I’m looking at my favorite TV Series of the year. Below is the Top 10 in ascending order. But first, let’s look at a few more that just missed the cut!

No. 20: Abbott Elementary, Season 3
No. 19: Mistletoe Murders, Season 1
No. 18: Fallout, Season 1
No. 17: Only Murders in the Building, Season 4
No. 16: Lioness, Season 2
No. 15: The Day of the Jackal
No. 14: The Diplomat, Season 2
No. 13: Fargo, Season 5
No. 12: Ripley
No. 11: House of the Dragon, Season 2

No. 10: Mr & Mrs Smith, Season 1 (Prime Video)
About:
This featured Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in a small-screen story based on the film. This had a completely different take and ended up being a great exploration of these two people, their relationship, and their spy life. It had some ups-and-downs, but I loved it.

No. 9: Black Doves, Season 1 (Netflix)
About:
There are a few spy tales on my list, including this six-episode Netflix series that dropped in December. It features Keira Knightly and Ben Whishaw in a great tale about two spies who are in different places in their lives. I liked the action and the way this one popped in its short run time.

No. 8: Evil, Season 4 (Paramount+)
About:
This is the final season of the series, and it featured some wild plots and some great performances. I’ve enjoyed this series throughout its run, and I’ll miss it. The final season brought a lot to the table, including some incredible craft. It’s worth checking out.

No. 7: The Lincoln Lawyer, Season 3 (Netflix)
About:
This procedural is based on the books from Michael Connelly. I have really enjoyed the exploration of this character and this world. The third season had an engaging case that I quickly binged. This is a bit under-the-radar, but I have really enjoyed it.

No. 6: Nobody Wants This, Season 1 (Netflix)
About:
A romantic comedy for Netflix. That sounds simple enough, but this one had a lot of interesting humor. Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are great here, but the whole supporting cast is delightful as well. I really enjoyed this one and its humor.

No. 5: Mr. Bates vs The Post Office (PBS)
About
: This is a four-episode limited series focusing on some British citizens fighting government corruption. It really drew me in, and I loved Toby Jones in the lead role. This was one of the big surprises of the year for me.

No. 4: Say Nothing (FX)
About:
This was one of the later entries to the year. It’s a mini-series based on the non-fiction book about the Troubles in Ireland over the course of decades. We follow members of the Irish Republican Army during the 1970s and meet them again later in their lives when they take stock of their choices. It’s beautifully constructed and quite powerful.

No. 3: Shogun, Season 1 (FX)
About
: We thought this would be a limited series, but now there will be a season two. I’m not sure how to feel about that, but I do love the 10 episodes we got. It’s a beautifully told story that is laid out well on screen. It features one of the best episodes of the year in “Crimson Sky.”

No. 2: The Bear, Season 3 (FX)
About:
The third season of this series was met with some criticism. I get that some didn’t love the arc of the narrative or the lack of resolution. But I found it profound. I loved the episodes and the rich performances. It was a deeply emotional binge, and one that nearly earned the top spot for me.

No. 1: Shrinking (Apple TV+)
About:
It wasn’t as strong a year for Apple TV+ as it has been in the past. But I loved the second season of this beautiful drama. Jason Segel is brilliant, as is Harrison Ford. The entire cast is great and the storyline for Brett Goldstein was deeply emotional. I laughed, I cried, and I was in awe, every episode. This was the best show of 2024.
