Oscars 2025: Actor races

The 97th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 2. The nominations were announced on January 23. In the run up to this year's awards, I'm looking at different races. Today, it's the race for actors.

Best Actor Nominees:

  • Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
  • Timothee Chalamet, A Complete Unknown
  • Coleman Domingo, Sing Sing
  • Ralph Fiennes, Conclave
  • Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice
About: This is a fascinating race. I like a number of the performances here, and all five have been applauded throughout the year. There are four of them who I'd be pleased to see win. But only one can be the winner, so who will it be? I think Chalamet could be a front-runner. He had two great performances in 2024. The same is true of Stan, who could be an interesting winner if the Academy wants to send a statement to the sitting President. Domingo, nominated for the second year in a row, is a class act who gave his heart-and-soul to his film. But, for me, if I was to pick a winner, it would be Fiennes. I loved his work and I loved his performance. I think he'll be the winner on March 2.

Best Supporting Actor Nominees:
  • Yura Borisov, Anora
  • Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
  • Edward Norton, A Complete Unknown
  • Guy Pearce, The Brutalist
  • Jeremy Strong, The Apprentice
About: Another interesting field. There are five unique performances here. Strong was incredible, but might be little more than a dark horse. Borisov and Pearce come from films which, if they catch the momentum, could carry either to the win. Norton is another player here that feels like something of a dark horse, but his film certainly carried sway with the Academy. However, Culkin has been a frequent winner and is the clear front-runner. He gave the best performance and should be the winner.
