2025 Broncos' Season, Free Agency

The 2025 NFL Season has begun, as the new league year kicked off on March 12. As part of a busy first week of the season, the Broncos have made a few splashes in free agency. Let's see how they've done below.

Players Departed

The Broncos lost a few players. Running back Javonte Williams signed a one-year deal with Cowboys. While I liked Williams, he didn't see a great fit with Sean Payton's system. I assumed he'd leave, so it's not a big surprise. A bigger surprise was that punter Riley Dixon signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Broncos had wanted him back, and now they'll have to find a new punter.

Among others who left, Zach Wilson signed with the Dolphins as the primary backup quarterback and Special Teams standout Tremon Smith signed with the Houston Texans. The only other loss for the Broncos was linebacker Cody Barton, who signed with the Titans.

New Players

The Broncos were active in free agency, too. They made their first splashes on defense, signing a pair of high-profile former 49ers. That gave them a boost at safety, as they locked up Talanoa Hufanga, and at linebacker, where they added Dre Greenlaw. Both were positions of need for the Broncos' defense and both signings figure to add some pop to what was already a good defense. The Broncos also brought back restricted free agent Justin Strnad at linebacker.

On offense, the big splash came on Wednesday as the team signed tight end Evan Engram to a two-year deal. The 30-year-old pass catcher was drafted by the Giants, and had some moments there, but really established himself as a star at the position in his three years with the Jaguars. However, he missed significant time in 2024 which led to his release.

Injuries are a theme for the big three signings for the Broncos. Both Hufanga and Greenlaw have struggled with injuries the past two seasons, and as noted Engram missed a bulk of 2024. It's three good signings if they can stay on the field and their injury woes are behind them. But if they can't, it could dampen the impact for the Broncos.

Finally, the Broncos brought back tackle Matt Peart and signed receiver Trent Sherfield, who figures to replace Smith as a key Special Teams player.

Overall, it's a strong start for the Broncos in free agency as they work on filling holes in advance of the draft. So far, the team is off to a good start.
