Easter is Coming
In Theaters:
* King of Kings. If you want a trip to the theaters, there's this animated tale. This one is about Charles Dickens telling the story of the Gospel to his kids. It's an interesting addition to the canon of tales about Jesus.
Resurrection Films:
* Passion of the Christ (2004). This film from Mel Gibson is focused on the end of Jesus' life. There is a sequel coming this year, which feels wild. But this is a well-made film that is one of the best on this subject.
* Risen (2016). This follows the death of Jesus, and focuses on some Roman soldiers who are trying to find where his body has been taken. Joseph Fiennes is the lead, and I thought this film was really engaging. If you haven't seen it, it's worth checking out.
Films About Jesus:
* The Nativity Story (2006). I enjoyed this portrayal of the beginning of Jesus' life. It features Oscar Isaac and Keisha Castle-Hughes as Joseph and Mary. It was a more Hollywood production, but I thought it did a nice job telling the story. This probably works better at Christmas, but if you're looking for the full breadth, it's worth checking out.
* The Young Messiah (2016). If you're looking for a slice of Jesus' life we don't often see, this film is interesting. It's based on a book from Anne Rice of all people. I don't love it, but I found it thought-provoking and even did a class on it once.
