Upcoming Releases: August, 2025

We've made it to August, the final month of the summer movie season. As always, there is a mixed bag of offerings, some of which look quite intriguing. Let's dive in.

Friday, August 1:
The Naked Gun (Theaters):
Liam Neeson takes over the lead in this reboot of the classic franchise. The trailer is funny, and I think this could be some late summer fun.

The Bad Guys 2 (Theaters): This is a sequel to the modest animated hit. I enjoyed the first film and it has a solid voice cast. It hasn't been a great summer for animated films, so maybe this will be a modest hit.

Together (Theaters): Alison Brie and Dave Franco lead this body horror film from Michael Shanks. It was a hit at Sundance and it should add some pop to August.

She Rides Shotgun (Theaters): An interesting drama about an ex-convict father (Taron Egerton) on the run with his daughter. This had some pop and was surprisingly emotional. It's worth checking out.

My Oxford Year (Netflix): This is a new romance film staring Sofia Carson. I've liked her other Netflix films, so I'm curious to see how this goes.

Wednesday, August 6:
The Pickup (Prime Video):
This is a mysterious new film starring Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson. Little is known about the plot, but I'm intrigued by the talent involved.

Friday, August 8:
Freakier Friday (Theaters):
The sequel with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It's been a few years, but it's nice to see these two reunited. This looks like some late summer fun.

Weapons (Theaters): This film is a bit mysterious. But I liked previous film from Zach Cregger, Barbarian, and I think this could be interesting and unique.

Friday, August 15:
Nobody 2 (Theaters):
The first film, starring Bob Odenkirk, was quite the fun, modest hit. This second one looks like more of the same and should be a fun way to close out the summer.

Americana (Theaters): This looks like a crime-gone-wrong tale. It has a strong cast, including Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, and Sydney Sweeney. Could be intriguing.

Wednesday, August 20:
The Map That Leads to You (Prime Video):
Another film starring Madelyn Cline, this time as a graduate who meets a stranger (KJ Apa) on a European trip. Hard to tell what to expect from this summer streaming romance.

Friday, August 22:
Honey Don't (Theaters):
Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke, deliver another quirky crime drama. Margaret Qualley leads the way again, this time adding Aubrey Plaza and Chris Evans. It looks interesting.

Splitsville (Theaters): This is an off-beat romantic comedy featuring Daktoa Johnson, Adria Arjona and writer/director Michael Angelo Covino. It has an interesting enough trailer. These kind of films live or die by the execution, so we'll see.

Thursday, August 28:
Thursday Murder Club (Netflix):
This one comes from Chris Columbus and features four retirees with a penchant for solving cold cases. The cast includes Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, and Richard E. Grant, among others. It looks fun.

Friday, August 29:
Caught Stealing (Theaters):
Sometimes Labor Day weekend is quiet at theaters, but this year we get a big release from Darren Aronofsky. This has a good cast, led by Austin Butler, and looks like a fun and wild ride.

The Roses (Theaters): This is a re-make of War of the Roses. This time it focuses on a warring couple played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman. This should be fun.

The Toxic Avenger (Theaters): A re-make of the horror film, this time with Peter Dinklage. This isn't the superhero film you're expecting, but it might work for this time at the movies.
