1990 Rewind: Edward Scissorhands
It's hard to believe, but 1990 was 35 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 1990 that are turning 35 in 2025. Today, it's about a Tim Burton classic.
Officer Allen: Will he be OK, Doc?
Psychologist: The years spent in isolation have not equipped him with the tools necessary to judge right from wrong. He's had no context. He's been completely without guidance. Furthermore, his work - the garden sculptures, hairstyles and so forth - indicate that he's a highly imaginative... uh... character. It seems clear that his awareness of what we call reality is radically underdeveloped.
Officer Allen: But will he be all right out there?
Psychologist: Oh yeah, he'll be fine.
Edward Scissorhands
Starring: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Diane Wiest, and Alan Arkin
Director: Tim Burton
About: Burton is a unique filmmaker, and one I deeply appreciate. He nearly made the Director's Series, and was in fact one of the toughest cuts. He has a knack for building these wildly creative worlds that embrace whimsy in life. Edward Scissorhands is an example of that. We see the beginning of a fruitful partnership with Depp in this film, as well as the continuation of his work with Ryder. Ryder and Depp are great here, especially playing off each other. I also love the look and feel of this world. The performances are great and the story is engaging, which is part of why it's endured this past 35 years.
