Best Picture Nominees: Marty Supreme

The Academy Awards are coming on March 15. We got the final list of nominees on January 22, and between now and the awards I'll be looking at the 10 Best Picture nominees and their chances of winning an award.

Total Nominations: 9
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Director (Safdie), Best Actor (Chalamet), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Casting, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Editing
About: Marty Supreme is one of the most nominated films of the year, and a favorite for many. For me, it was my least favorite of the nominees for Best Picture. That has more to do with personal taste than craft, which is excellent. The question is how it's going to do in this competition. That's an open question. It received nine nominations, and should be in the race in many categories. But I wouldn't say it's a lock to win in any category. Which means, it could be one of those films that is good and recognized everywhere, but doesn't end up being able to call itself an Oscar winner. In the below-the-line craft categories, it's not a favorite anywhere. It's a good film and an interesting period piece, but it's not likely to claim anything. The same goes for cinematography and screenplay. In the director's race, Safdie appears to be well behind Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson. In fact, I think he's behind Chloe Zhao and Joachim Trier, too. Similarly, I don't see the film being in the Top 3 in the Best Picture race. So, where could Marty Supreme break through? Well, the best shot is Marty himself, Chalamet. Will he win the Oscar? It's seemed at times he was a favorite, but it's a tough race. If the film itself doesn't have much momentum, that will hurt his chances. So, it's probably Chalamet or nothing. I'm leaning toward it ending up going home empty-handed.
