Upcoming Releases: May, 2026

 We've made it to May, which is the official kickoff to the Summer Movie season. While there are some interesting releases, May is lighter on blockbusters than in year's past. Let's dive in.

Friday, May 1:
* The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Theaters)
: The big film to kickoff summer is this highly anticipated sequel. This should be a fun romantic comedy to begin the season.

* Animal Farm (Theaters): This is an animated film based on the George Orwell novel of the same name. Yes, you read that correctly. But, this seems aimed at kids?

* Deep Water (Theaters): We have a plane that crashes in shark infested waters. So, a shark movie and a disaster movie. I'm already seated.

* Hokum (Theaters): This is a horror release. It's more of a haunted house type set up with Adam Scott in the lead role. It looks creepy.

* Swapped (Netflix): This is an original animated feature with a voice cast that includes Michael B. Jordan. This offers some family-friendly entertainment at home.

Friday, May 8:
* The Sheep Detectives (Theaters):
Is the premise for this kind of wild? Yes. But the trailer is fun and the cast is amazing. I'm kind of all in.

* Mortal Kombat II (Theaters): This was delayed from Fall. It makes more sense as a summer release, but I still am not sold.

* Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Theaters): This is your standard concert film, but this time directed by Eilish and James Cameron. Some interesting summer season fare.

* Remarkably Bright Creatures (Netflix): This original drama features Sally Field as well as Alfred Molina as... an octopus. It looks fun and heart-warming for Mother's Day weekend.

Friday, May 15:
* Obsession (Theaters):
This horror film from Curry Barker made a splash at festivals in 2025. Now we get it released in theaters. It looks creepy.

Is God Is (Theaters): This dark action film has an amazing cast and an amazing vibe in the trailers. It probably won't be for everyone (especially kids), but it looks cool.

* In the Grey (Theaters): This is a new action film from Guy Ritchie that features Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. This is what summer is all about.

Friday, May 22:
* Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 22):
I loved the show. I love Grogu. I can't wait to see this and see Star Wars make a big return to theaters!

*Passenger (Theaters): In some counter-programming this is a low-budget, deeply unsettling horror film. The trailer gave me nightmares, so...

* I Love Boosters (Theaters): This is the new comedy from Boots Riley. Expect an up-tempo narrative and a really wild color pallet.

Friday, May 29:
* The Breadwinner (Theaters):
This was pushed from March and should be great in the late May window. Nate Bargatze is a lot of fun and this looks great!

* Tuner (Theaters): This is about a piano tuner that gets pulled into a life of crime. It features Leo Woodall in a good performance with an interesting story. It's worth a look.

*Backrooms (Theaters): This is the latest horror film from A24. It's got a creepy trailer, but I like the cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.

Pressure (Theaters): Strong timing for late May, falling just after Memorial Day, this World War II film focuses on the run up to D-Day with Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott in lead roles. I think this looks great.
