2001 Rewind: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

It's hard to believe, but 2001 was 25 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 2001 that are turning 25 in 2026. Today, it's an ambitious literary adaptation.

Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Starring
: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, and Andy Serkis
Director: Peter Jackson
About: The Lord of the Rings books are dense, fanciful stories that have thrilled readers for generations. I remember when it was announced the books would be adapted for the screen. I rushed to finish Fellowship of the Ring just before going to see the film during Christmas break. It was a thrilling experience. In fact, the whole trilogy holds a special place for me. But it's this first film that has to nail it all and bring the audience in. It does that quite well. The production was unlike anything I'd seen, and it boasts a great cast and a lot of interesting action. Even after 25 years, it holds up as a unique cinematic achievement.
