2001 Rewind: Zoolander


It's hard to believe, but 2001 was 25 years ago. Over the next few weeks I'm going to be looking at some stand out films from 2001 that are turning 25 in 2026. Today, it's a classic comedy.

Derek Zoolander: If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

About: I remember when 9/11 happened. The world was changed. It was a dark time that left a lot of people feeling scared and hopeless as life sort of stopped. Then we got our first sporting events. Then movies came back. Zoolander was the first film I saw after 9/11. It was silly and a complete diversion from life. I will always fondly remember it for that experience, which came at a time when I felt like I really needed it. It also still holds up as a fun and creative comedy. It's a perfect film to celebrate as we remember what cinema was like back in 2001!

  It was an interesting week for new releases in theaters. Below is my take on the two big theatrical films from the weekend.   It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out?   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.
