Upcoming Releases, August 2026


 We've made it to August, the end of summer. This is about some of the last hurrahs of the summer season, with blockbusters, smaller films, and a jam-packed slate. Let's dive in!

Friday, August 7:
* Ice Cream Man (Theaters): This is a new horror film from Eli Roth. It bears no connection to the film previously holding this title, but it certainly looks to be a gorefest.

* One Night Only (Theaters): What if The Purge was a comedy about pre-marital sex? That's the premise here with a cast led by Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro. It looks fun enough.

*Super Troopers 3 (Theaters): This is the third installment of the Super Troopers film franchise. These over-the-top comedies are always a bit of fun, and have a built-in audience.

*Cookie Queens (Limited): This is the wideish release of the documentary about Girl Scouts that played festivals earlier in the year. It looks like an interesting addition to the lineup.

*The Last House (Netflix): This is a new sci-fi/horror film led by Gretta Lee and Wagner Moura. It's a good cast and should be a breezy stream on Netflix!

Friday, August 14:
* The End of Oak Street (Theaters): One of the pearls of the month, this is a sci-fi epic starring Ewan McGreggor and Anne Hathaway. It focuses on a family whose portion of the block was transported to the land of dinosaurs. Yes, you read that correctly.

*Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (Theaters): This was a festival darling, the new horror film from Jane Schoenbrun. It has a great cast and an interesting premise. This should be a draw.

*Paw Patrol 3: The Dino Movie (Theaters): You know, for kids. This is an animated follow up for Paw Patrol fanatics.

*The Rivals of Amziah King (Theaters): This one stars Matthew McConaughey, and played festivals last year. It's an indie drama that could have some pull and intrigue, but it's a crowded release date.

*Nimrods (Theaters): This is a new comedy about a band tapped to open for Green Day. This is for the comedy slacker crowd, but it does star Mason Thames and McKenna Grace.

*The Brink of War (Theaters): This is the newest Angel Studios release, starring Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan and Jared Harris as Gorbachev. It's a Cold War film but it has a strong cast.

*The Wrong Girls (Theaters): This is a new stoner comedy, which makes for some direct competition with Nimrods. It stars Alia Shawkat and Kristen Stewart and should have an appeal for genre fans.

Friday, August 21:
*Insidious: Out of the Further (Theaters): How many more times can we return to this franchise? At least once more with this new spin-off that boasts a really creepy trailer.

*Tony (Theaters): After a limited opening early in August this one gets a wider release mid-month. It is a biopic about the late Anthony Bourdain, and it looks to be one of the more engaging films of the month.

*Mutiny (Theaters): Do you enjoy seeing Jason Statham kick some butt? If so, this is your annual release of him beating some morality into a group of shady thugs.

*Spa Weekend (Theaters): This is a girls trip type comedy, about a group of women who gather for a spa weekend. The cast includes Anna Faris, Isla Fisher, and Leslie Mann, among others. It looks like some fun.

*The Magic of Faraway Tree (Theaters): This magical film boasts a stellar cast and already played in the U.K. earlier this year. It offers a little late-summer outing for families.

Friday, August 28:
*The Dog Stars (Theaters): Ridley Scott directs this apocalyptic drama starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, among others. The trailer looks haunting and this could be a nice way to end August.

*Coyote vs. Acme (Theaters): Once shelved indefinitely, the film has been acquired and will now be released. Will it be worth it? Probably not, but it will make a statement to go!

*Finding Emily (Theaters): This new romantic comedy stars Angourie Rice. It played earlier in the year in the U.K. and now drops in the United States.

*Idiots (Theaters): This comedy made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival and now it makes its wide release debut. The cast is led by Dave Franco and Kiernan Shipka, and this looks like a bit of late-summer fun.

*The Whisper Man (Netflix): The streamer is back with a serial killer thriller. This one features Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott, among others. I like the cast and think this could be an interesting streaming option to wrap up the month.

  It was an interesting week for new releases in theaters. Below is my take on the two big theatrical films from the weekend. Boy Kills World (Theaters) Starring : Bill Skarsgard, Jessica Rothe, Famke Janssen, Brett Gellman, and Michelle Dockery Synopsis : We have seen a lot of action films this year. Many have featured violent sequences, but some have been more artful than others. The new film, Boy Kills World, provides plenty of violence. It’s right there in the title.   It’s Christmas week, and you might find yourself looking for some distractions in the form of new shows to check out. But which are worth checking out? Let this weekly post be your guide as I review the pilot and second episode of new shows this Fall. Don’t see a new show listed below? Check previous weeks. Tuesdays: American Auto, Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC (Premiered December 13) About: A lot was made of the fact NBC, former home of Must-See TV, launched a schedule this Fall with no sitcoms. NBC isn’t planning to do the same in the winter, and they got a jump start to close the year, offering two-episode previews of a pair of new sitcoms that will begin their normal runs in January. The first, American Auto , comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer and centers on a new CEO (Ana Gasteyer) at a car company.   It was a solid week for new releases, including my favorite animated film of the year. You can keep up with everything I’m watching by following me on Letterboxd @knighthawk7734.  Brats (Hulu) Synopsis : From Andrew McCarthy, this new documentary takes a look at the infamous Brat Pack. The film features interviews with the members as they look back at the title that branded them and helped define some of their career. As a member of the group, McCarthy brings a unique perspective. Often the interviews, with actors such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Timothy Hutton, and Demi Moore, among others, feels more like old friends catching up. There’s a sweetness and a lightness to the documentary that is incredibly appealing. The film does a good job of capturing the highs and lows, and helping these actors and actresses give an account of what the pressure of that time—and these high-profile films—meant in their lives and their careers.
