Picking some Emmy winners

The Emmy Awards are like the Jan Brady of awards shows. They are overshadowed by the prestigious older sister (The Academy Awards) and the wild and unpredictably fun younger child (The Golden Globe Awards). Plus, it's nearly impossible to work up the energy to figure out how nominees and winners are selected, but most of the time it's disappointing.

However, since the awards take place tomorrow and the marketing effort of this year's telecast seeks to make you believe the show is relevant, it's time for some fearless predictions. If I even get close to 30 percent, I'll call it a win!

Best Drama:
"Breaking Bad"
"Dexter"
"The Good Wife"
"Lost"
"Mad Men"
"True Blood"

Will Win: Mad Men. Critics seem to love this AMC drama, and it has a passionate and dedicated fan base. Thought "LOST" could get some love in its last season, I think the voters will take the safe choice.

Should Win: "Dexter." This is a show with a dark premise and dark subject matter, but the writing and acting was just incredible in 2009. The fourth season was the show's best, and created one of the most legitimately surprising finales I've ever seen.

Best Comedy:
"30 Rock"
"Curb Your Enthusiasm"
"Glee"
"Modern Family"
"Nurse Jackie"
"The Office"

Will Win: "Modern Family." This seems to be the critical darling. Many people like the show, and it seems that a win for this show would also send some kind of political statement.

Should Win: No show made a bigger splash last year than "Glee." The show spawned a number of successful CDs, an incredible live concert series, and became a worldwide phenomenon. And it was wildly hilarious.

Best Actor, Drama:
Brian Cranston, "Breaking Bad"
Michael C. Hall, "Dexter"
Kyle Chandler, "Friday Night Lights"
Hugh Laurie, "House"
Matthew Fox, "Lost"
Jon Hamm, "Mad Men"

Will Win and Should Win: Michael C. Hall, "Dexter." Hall finally broke through at the Golden Globes, and I think he will earn the same here. Likely it will be a win for Hall and not for the show. It's possible Cranston, Hamm or Emmy favorite Laurie could sneak in, but it just feels like Hall's year.

Best Actress, Drama:
Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife"
Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer"
Glenn Close, "Damages"
Connie Britton, "Friday Night Lights"
Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: SVU"
January Jones, "Mad Men"

Will Win: Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife." All the buzz has leaned toward Margulies, and this appears to be her award to lose.

Should Win: Connie Britton, "Friday Night Lights." "Friday Night Lights" is an incredible show that has never gotten its due. Britton and fellow nominee Kyle Chandler are the heart of the show, and at least one of them deserves a little recognition for it.

Best Supporting Actor, Drama:
Martin Short, "Damages"
Aaron Paul, "Breaking Bad"
Terry O'Quinn, "Lost"
Michael Emerson, "Lost"
John Slattery, "Mad Men"
Andre Braugher, "Men of a Certain Age"

Will Win: Terry O'Quinn, "Lost." O'Quinn's John Locke was a critical darling, and in this last year of "LOST" it makes sense for him to earn the win.

Should Win: Either of the "LOST" actors are deserving.

Best Supporting Actress, Drama:
Sharon Gless, "Burn Notice"
Rose Byrne, "Damages"
Archie Panjabi, "The Good Wife"
Christine Baranski, "The Good Wife"
Christina Hendricks, "Mad Men"
Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men"

Will Win and Should Win: Christina Hendricks, "Mad Men." Hendricks' character is one of the most popular and most pivotal to "Mad Men," and she should take home the hardware.

Best Actor, Comedy:
Jim Parsons, "Big Bang Theory"
Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
Matthew Morrison, "Glee"
Tony Shalhoub, "Monk"
Steve Carell, "The Office"
Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock"

Will Win: Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory." "Bang" took a big leap in popularity this year, and the tidal wave of support seems to be behind Parsons.

Should Win: Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm." "Curb" had an incredible year, as did David, who is worthy of an award this year.

Best Actress, Comedy:
Tina Fey, "30 Rock"
Lea Michele, "Glee"
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine"
Edie Falco, "Nurse Jackie"
Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"
Toni Collette, "United States of Tara"

Will Win: Too close to call.

Should Win: Tina Fey, "30 Rock." Fey is an incredible writer and has blossomed into a great performer. She really helps carry her show in a unique way.

Best Supporting Actor, Comedy:
Chris Colfer, "Glee"
Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother"
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, "Modern Family"
Eric Stonestreet, "Modern Family"
Ty Burrell, "Modern Family"
Jon Cryer, "Two and a Half Men"

Will and Should Win: Chris Colfer, "Glee." Colfer shinned as Kurt on "Glee." With the "Modern Family" trio splitting the vote and Harris having earned an award already, it seems to be Colfer's time to shine.

Best Supporting Actress, Comedy:
Julie Bowen, "Modern Family"
Jane Lynch, "Glee"
Sofia Vergara, 'Modern Family"
Kristen Wiig, "Saturday Night Live"
Jane Krakowski, "30 Rock"
Holland Taylor, "Two and a Half Men

Will and Should Win: Jane Lynch, "Glee." This might be the biggest lock. Lynch created a memorable, popular character and overshadows her fellow nominees.

The Emmys air at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday night on NBC.
