A Defining Weekend

With the College Football regular season coming to an end, this was set up to be the biggest weekend for those hoping to get to the national title game. Auburn faced rival Alabama, Oregon faced Arizona, TCU hoped to stay perfect, and Boise State faced a stiff test in Nevada.

Going into the weekend, the big question was whether or not Boise State and or TCU would get a chance to play for the title. Both were undefeated, but from non-BCS conference that didn't afford them much respect.

Early in the day, it looked as though Auburn might make things more interesting when they fell behind 24-0 to Alabama. Instead, Auburn battled back behind embattled quarterback Cam Newton and pulled off the 28-27 win to all but assure them of a shot at the title.

Oregon, similarly, held serve and appears a lock for the title game.

TCU won their game big, but appears to be the odd team out, again...

Then there's Boise State. Riding the nation's longest winning streak, Boise has been critical darlings. All season I've watched, hoping Boise would work itself into the big game. But with the pressure on Friday night, Boise's streak came to an end in a 34-31 overtime loss. Boise's dream of a title ended on the field Friday night.

But what they've accomplished over the past three years can't be overlooked. The team shocked Oklahoma in a major bowl game, beat TCU last year in a battle of unbeatens, and rattled off 24 straight wins. Not to mention Boise State has changed the landscape of college football.

And as for Auburn and Oregon, they continue to prove that in a season where many of the "No. 1" teams have been paper tigers, they have the stuff to contend for college football's biggest prize. TCU probably feels the same but, as with all recent college football seasons, it will be up to a group of journalists, a group of coaches, and a computer to decide who's best.

Playoffs anyone?
