Globes Predictions

On Sunday, the second best awards show takes place as Ricky Gervais returns as host for the Golden Globe awards. This show is hardly a forecast for the Academy Awards, but it can be quite a bit of fun. Below are my predictions of who will win, and who I'd like to win in the major categories for TV and Movies.

Best Picture, Drama:
Will Win: Hugo
Should Win: The Descendants
This is kind of a tough category to call. You could make a case for any of the nominees, but I think the film celebration/preservation angle will capture voters. If pressed, though, I think "The Descendants" was the best film.

Best Picture, Comedy/Musical:
Will and Should Win: The Artist
This is a bit of going out on a limb, too, since the film hasn't come here, but by all accounts "The Artist" is a masterpiece, and the only film in this group that's a serious Best Picture contender with the Academy Awards.

Best Actor, Drama:
Will and Should Win: George Clooney, "The Descendants"
Again, a bit of a toss up. There is a case to be made for several people in this category, but I think it's Clooney's year. It was his best performance to date.

Best Actress, Drama:
Will Win: Viola Davis, "The Help"
Should Win: Rooney Mara, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"
Really, I'd be happy with either. A case could be made for either. In fact, prior to December 21, when I saw "Dragon Tattoo," I thought Davis gave the year's best performance. But there is something about the work of Mara that keeps sticking with me. Either is a deserving performer here.

Best Actor, Comedy/Musical:
Will and Should Win: Jean Dujardin, "The Artist"
Again, it feels like the year for "The Artist."

Best Actress, Comedy/Musical:
Will Win: Michelle Williams, "My Week with Marilyn"
Should Win: Charlize Theron, "Young Adult"
Simply put, "Young Adult" is unwatchable with someone else. Williams, however, has garnered all the critical acclaim.

Best Supporting Actor:
Will Win: Christopher Plummer, "The Beginners"
This is a sentimental favorite. I don't really have a good feeling about who stood out among the nominees.

Best Supporting Actress:
Will Win: Octavia Spencer, "The Help"
Should Win: Shailene Woodley, "The Descendants"
Again, you could make a case for either lady, I just was blown away by what Woodley did in a subtly brilliant film.

Best Director:
Will and Should Win: Alexander Payne, "The Descendants"
It's high time Payne earned his due for what he does in creating rich, vibrant films.

Best Screenplay:
Will and Should Win: Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, "The Descendants"
I think this was the best film, and I think it will be recognized as such here.

Best Animated Film:
Will Win: "The Adventures of Tintin"
This film is based on a popular European title, which gives it the edge with the Hollywood Foreign Press. Plus, it comes from Steven Spielberg.

Best TV Series, Drama:
Will Win: American Horror Story
Should Win: Homeland
"Homeland" was great, but I think the HFP will favor the weird, edgy show from Ryan Murphy.

Best TV Series, Comedy:
Will Win: Modern Family
Should Win: New Girl
Call me crazy, but I think "New Girl" is the best new comedy in quite some time.

Best Mini-Series, TV Movie:
Will and Should Win: Downton Abbey
Television doesn't get much better than "Downton Abbey."

Best Actor, Drama:
Will Win: Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad"
Should Win: Damien Lewis, "Homeland"
The critics love "Breaking Bad." I loved "Homeland." We can see were this is going.

Best Actress, Drama:
Will and Should Win: Claire Danes, "Homeland"
Danes was phenomenal. This will be the one shout out for "Homeland" Sunday night.

Best Actor, Comedy:
Will Win: Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock"
Tough category to sort out.

Best Actress, Comedy:
Will Win: Amy Poehler, "Parks and Recreation"
Seems to be a critical favorite in an odd set of nominees.

Best Actor, Mini-Series:
Will Win: Hugh Bonneville, "Downton Abbey"
Again, a tough set of nominees to pick from.

Best Actress, Mini-Series:
Will Win: Kate Winslet, "Mildred Pierce"
She already took the Emmy for the role, this only makes sense.

Best Supporting Actor, TV Series:
Will Win: Peter Dinklage, "Game of Thrones"
He is great in the role and it was one of HBO's best series of 2011.

Best Supporting Actress, TV Series:
Will Win: Jessica Lange, "American Horror Story"
It feels like her year and, as I said, critics love the show.

The Golden Globes begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday night on NBC.
