Upcoming Releases — March

With February nearly gone, and the Academy Awards nearly behind us, we move toward an interesting mix of highly anticipated and big budget films this March, as well as a few smaller ones. Here's a look at what's coming up.

Friday, March 2:
Dr. Seuss' The Lorax — Here we have our first big animated feature of the year. With a hot voice cast (Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny Devito, among them), a fun theme, and a big marketing push, this certainly seems like an animated winner.

Project X — Not much is known about this film save for the fact that it's a wild, teen party film. Then again, I guess that pretty much says it all.

Friday, March 9:
John Carter — This is a big budget sci-fi epic (rumors of $250 million production). The film is meant to kick start a series, but the ads are weird and those unfamiliar with the source material likely will have trouble getting a feel for the film. Could be the first big money loser of the year, despite a massive publicity campaign.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen — A romantic dramedy from director Lasse Hallstrom starring Ewan McGreggor and Emily Blunt. It's about fly-fishing and the Middle East, so it has to be poignant.

Friends With Kids — A fun comedy from writer/director Jessica Westerfeldt. Has a good cast, including Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, and Chris O'Dowd.

A Thousand Words — This is a family-friendly comedy starring Eddie Murphy. Yeah, I'm worried about that idea too.

Friday, March 16:
21 Jump Street — This comedy homage to the 1980s TV series stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the film. In addition to a Johnny Depp cameo, the film actually looks like it might be fun and sort of funny.

Casa de mi Padre — Don't know much about this save for the fact it's a comedy, set in Mexico, starring Will Ferrell. Could be intriguing... or terrible. Let's hope for the former.

Friday, March 23:
The Hunger Games — One of the most anticipated films of the new year, this is the first of a series of films based on the popular book series. With "Harry Potter" done and "Twilight" ending, this is said to be the hot new series for young adult fiction fans. The trailers look awesome, so I have HIGH hopes this will be great.

Friday, March 30:
Wrath of the Titans — No, we didn't need a sequel to the new "Clash of the Titans" film. But we got one anyway... in 3D no less. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Mirror Mirror — One of two projects about Snow White due out this year. This is the funny one starring Julia Roberts as the evil queen. Could be good, as it has been a great year for fairy tales.

Goon — A sports comedy starring Seann William Scott as an out-of-control hockey player. Yeah, Hollywood is running short on good ideas.
