Upcoming Releases — April

With March quickly fading away, we have just one month before summer films roll into theaters. Here's a look at the major releases coming soon to a theater near you!

Friday, April 6:
Titanic 3D — (April 4) Here the Best Picture winner from 1997 gets a re-release. This is happening for three reasons. 1 — this year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship. 2 — James Cameron has added 3D to this film. 3 — studios never miss a chance to make more money. That being said, while I'm not wild about the 3D re-releases, "Titanic" was a well-made film and there is a certain excitement to it being re-released for the 100th anniversary.

American Reunion — The fourth of the "American Pie" films, this one reunites all the favorite players from the original film. This film probably resonates with a certain group of people who are around the same age as the characters. Since the characters graduated from high school the same year I did, it makes me feel old. This will likely have some mad cap laughs and make a few statements about growing up... or not if you're Steve Stiffler.

Friday, April 13:
Cabin in the Woods — Joss Whedon is incredible, so that alone is enough to make me curious about "Cabin in the Woods." It's gotten great buzz, has a decent cast, and has a premise that celebrates what the horror genre should be. It could be about scares, not bloody violence for the sake of violence. I have high hopes for this cinematic treat.

Lockout — A futuristic prison movie with Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace... yeah I'm not feeling it either. This could be an OK action film, but that's about the nicest thing to say about this film.

The Three Stooges — Some people are probably wildly excited about this film, but I'm not one of them. If you liked the original stooges, and that type of humor, this film will tickle your funny bone. But even the trailers look dated. This is a throwback that should have been held back.

Friday, April 20:
The Lucky One — Zac Efron in a Nicholas Sparks novel adaptation? Do we even need to ask? Find the ladies and a big box of Kleenex. You'll need both to enjoy this one.

Chimpanzee — One of the best things about the past five years has been the annual Disney Nature documentary release for Earth Day. This year's entry looked to be no exception.

Think Like a Man — A romantic comedy with Chris Brown — yes, that Chris Brown — in the lead role as a relationship expert. That does sound funny...

To the Arctic 3D — Another nature documentary (must be Earth Day). This one is in 3D and narrated by Margaret Thatcher... or make that Meryl Streep.

Friday, April 27:
The Five Year Engagement — This is a romantic comedy starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. The trailers look great, which gives me hope this could be a little comedic gem.

The Raven — This is a crime drama featuring Edgar Allen Poe (John Cusack) solving crimes based on his work. Could be interesting. The trailers look somewhat promising, as does the premise. Limited optimism is warranted here.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits — You guessed it, an animated film. This one looks pretty kid friendly. For adults... not so much.

Safe — An action film starring Jason Statham. Do you really need to know more? He's like a modern Steven Segal, just expect action, little dialogue, and little logic to the plot and you'll be all set.
