Best of TV, No. 8

Today I continue my countdown of my favorite TV series of all time with one that's libel to be polarizing.

LOST (2004-2010)
Network: ABC
About: "LOST" ran for six seasons on ABC, and will go down as one of the most polarizing shows ever. Fans largely loved or hated the series as a whole based on the conclusion to the six-season-long mystery. That's understandable. The show was built around a group of people who survived a plane crash on a mysterious island. The island became a part of the show, and the dense mythology that was a part of the world. It was never going to be possible to please all those who had theories about what was happening, especially as the series went on and the plot became more complex. The producers did their best and, to their credit, did a pretty fine job of getting the show out. Still, for many the ending was unsatisfying. I am one of those who wasn't pleased by the series' finale. I actually wasn't pleased with much of the last two seasons, in terms of story. So, why is "LOST" on this list? Well, because two years later it is still the topic of conversation. And, two years later, I still miss it. "LOST" was an event when it was on. It was a show that had intricate week-to-week plots and great characters, but it also had a overall narrative that was an incredible puzzle. I loved the first and second season, got a little concerned in the third season and absolutely loved the fourth season. To me, that fourth season was the show's peak. The last two seasons were fascinating, but I wasn't as pleased with how the producers sought to wrap up the action. That is a matter of personal preference. But the fact that this show was densely populated and a great experience is undeniable. And, now that the whole puzzle is complete, it's fun to go back and look for all the hidden clues you missed along the way. Any show that offers new nuggets on a second, third, fourth, or fifth viewing has done something right.
Where To See It: All six seasons of "LOST" are available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
