Golden Globe Picks

Tonight is the Golden Globe awards, arguably the most fun award show. It's just acting, directing, writing, and picture awards for TV and Movies. It's a cool party and it can give you an idea of what's trending in advance of the Academy Awards. Below are my picks.

Best Picture — Drama: Lincoln
There are a lot of solid choices here, but I think "Lincoln" was the best movie this year. You could make a case for a few others, but it's probably "Lincoln" this year.

Best Picture — Musical or Comedy: Les Miserables
If I were picking which film I thought was the best, that would be hands down "Silver Linings Playbook." While "Les Miserables" doesn't seem to be doing well with Academy voters, it seems to be a leading favorite at the Globes.

Best Actor, Drama: Daniel Day Lewis, "Lincoln"
Five great performances in this category, but Daniel Day Lewis was the best.

Best Actress, Drama: Jessica Chastain, "Zero Dark Thirty"
Chastain is on quite a run, and I think she's the front-runner here.

Best Actor, Musical or Comedy: Bradley Cooper, "Silver Linings Playbook"
Just a great performance here. I could see Hugh Jackman grabbing this one if the Globes voters are locked on to "Les Miserables," but Cooper was the best performer here.

Best Actress, Musical or Comedy: Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook"
Again, Lawrence is the best performer here. She was great in two movies — including "The Hunger Games" — but I think she wins here. Of course, award darling Meryl Streep could pull this out.

Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones, "Lincoln"
Jones has a slight edge, for me, in a loaded category. There are a lot of worthy choices here, but I think "Lincoln" will clean up tonight.

Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway, "Les Miserables"
This might be the second closest thing to a lock tonight. Sally Field could draw some votes, but Hathaway was simply amazing.

Best Director: Steven Spielberg, "Lincoln"
I think Spielberg gets the edge for "Lincoln." I could see Kathryn Bigelow getting it for "Zero Dark Thirty," but I think "Lincoln" is the hot film this year.

Best Screenplay: Mark Boal, "Zero Dark Thirty"
It could be a "Lincoln" sweep, in which case the award goes to Tony Kushner, but I think there will be some diversity. Boal did a great job with a dense and fascinating film.

Best Original Song: Adele and Paul Epworth, "Skyfall"
Just a gut feeling here. Everyone likes Adele, and "Skyfall" is pretty popular.

Best Original Score: John Williams, "Lincoln"
Five good choices here, but a rising tide carries all ships. Thus, I give the nod to Williams and his work on "Lincoln."

Best Animated Film: Wreck-It Ralph
Pixar has dominated this category historically, but probably not this year. I think "Wreck-It Ralph" keeps it in the Disney family.

Best Foreign Language Film: Amour
This film has drawn rave reviews, and a Best Picture nomination from the Academy.

Best TV Series — Drama: Homeland
It's been "Homeland's" year on the awards circuit. It's the best show, period.

Best TV Series — Comedy: Girls
This HBO show has been a critical darling. I don't love "Girls," but I see it's appeal. I think it wins here.

Best Mini Series or Motion Picture for TV: Game Change
Simply the best HBO original film last year. In a weaker grouping, "Game Change" stands out.

Best Actor in a TV Series — Drama: Damien Lewis, "Homeland"
I foresee another "Homeland" sweep.

Best Actress in a TV Series — Drama: Claire Danes, "Homeland"
Again, I see a "Homeland" sweep.

Best Actor in a TV Series — Comedy: Jim Parsons, "Big Bang Theory"
For reasons passing understanding, this series is huge right now. I would give the nod to Alec Baldwin, but I think it's Parsons this year.

Best Actress in a TV Series — Comedy: Lena Dunham, "Girls"
Dunham does everything on the most acclaimed comedy on TV.

Best Actor in a TV Series — Mini Series or TV Movie: Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock"
He is great, and the show is great. He deserves this win.

Best Actress in a TV Series — Mini Series or TV Movie: Jessica Lange, "American Horror Story"
Lange, and her show, seem to be critical favorites.

Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series: Mandy Patinkin, "Homeland"
I think it's a "Homeland" sweep, but I wish Max Greenfield would win. He is Awesome on "New Girl."

Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series: Maggie Smith, "Downton Abbey"
Smith is the best performer on a wildly popular series.

The awards begin live at 8 p.m. Eastern tonight on NBC.
