Best Picture Nominees — 'Argo'

I continue my look at Best Picture nominees by looking at one of the most interesting cases.

Argo
Starring: Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Kyle Chandler, and Victor Garber
Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Arkin), Best Adapted Screenplay (Chris Terrio), Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing
Synopsis: "Argo" is probably drawing more attention for the nomination it didn't get than the seven it did. That nomination — the glaring omission of Affleck in the Best Director race — has caused consternation, confusion, and outrage. It's also having a huge impact on this Best Picture race. Following the nominations, most people assumed it was "Lincoln" this year. After all, other key contenders didn't even get Best Director nominations. But in the time since the nominations were announced — and in no small way thanks to the outrage of the Affleck snub — "Argo" has won everything. The Directors Guild even named Affleck the Best Director of the year. So, yeah, this film has juice when it counts. Like the Baltimore Ravens, "Argo" has peaked at just the right time. It's the favorite, now, to win the big prize on Sunday night, and I think it will too. In addition, most Best Picture winners take the editing prize, so I look to "Argo" to nab that as well. But what about the other five nominations? Well, those aren't as likely. Arkin was good in "Argo," but in a crowded field he isn't at the head of the pack. Same for Terrio. While "Lincoln" won't likely claim the top prize, screenwriter Tony Kushner is the favorite. In the other technical categories, smaller films are more likely to be honored. So, while Affleck has no chance at winning Best Director, don't be surprised to see him — and "Argo" — go home with the biggest prize. And while some might quibble that this is a political victory, "Argo" is one of a handful of nominees this year you could make a case for deserving the Best Picture honors. It just so happens its got the momentum as well.
Rating: R for language and some violent images. Enter with caution.
Verdict: Four stars out of four.
