Broncos know who they'll have to get through in 2013

We are on the cusp of the NFL draft, but it was last week's release of the 2013 schedule that was meant to help tide fans over until games return in August. Of course I still wonder if the Broncos will be ready for the season based on the moves they've made — or haven't made — this off-season, but that's a question for another day.

For today, it's time to consider some of the big dates on the 2013 schedule.

1. Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos, Thursday, September 5
The season begins the same way last year ended — with the Broncos hosting the Ravens. It will be a big match of a game that was both fascinating to watch and heart-breaking for Broncos fans. This time around the Broncos will have Wes Welker, the Ravens will be missing some famous pieces (Ed Reed and Ray Lewis), and Elvis Dumervil will be wearing purple. Oh, and it's the first game of the season on National TV. What a way to start.

2. Denver Broncos at New York Giants, Sunday, September 15
It doesn't get much easier for the Broncos in week 2 as it's the occasional brother versus brother game. When Peyton and Eli square off, anything can happen. The Giants had a disappointing year last season, but they are still a formidable team. The Broncos should be good too, and will want to get off to a good start.

3. Denver Broncos at Indianapolis Colts, Sunday, October 20
Peyton Manning makes his return to Indianapolis in prime time. The Broncos were the better team last year and will presumably be the better team this year, but these Colts are scrappy. Both these teams were in the playoffs last year, and the Colts are a good home team. This one could be a shoot out, and it will be fun to see what kind of reception Peyton gets coming back.

4. Washington Redskins at Denver Broncos, Sunday October 27
Mike Shanahan makes his return to Denver with a new team that made the playoffs and had one of the most electric players in the NFL. Robert Griffin III might not be ready for opening day, but he'll certainly be in the lineup (barring additional injury) for this game that will take the Broncos into their bye week. This also brings to a close a tremendously challenging first half of the season.

5. Denver Broncos at New England Patriots, Sunday, November 24
Wes Welker makes his return to New England in the annual battle of Broncos and Patriots. This is a great rivalry and being late in the season, it could have serious playoff seeding implications. Plus, it's always great to see Peyton and Tom Brady square off. This is a must see battle.

6. Denver Broncos at Houston Texans, Sunday, December 22
This is the penultimate game of the season, and it's on the road. This could have huge playoff implications and should be, again, a battle of two of the best teams in the AFC. Call it an early Christmas present for the viewers.
