Upcoming Releases — March

Here's a look at the new movies coming our way this March.

Friday, March 7:
300: Rise of an Empire — I wasn't one of those that loved "300." There were some impressive visuals, yes, but I didn't care for the story or the level of sex and violence. It's hard for me to imagine a scenario where I'd be excited to see this sequel, which promises more of the same.

Mr. Peabody and Sherman — A month after the release of "The Lego Movie," which has dominated the Box Office in February, we get out next kid-friendly feature. There has been a lot of pre-release promotion here, and I think this one will be a hit, too.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (Limited) — Wes Anderson's latest charming comedy opens in limited release, with most cities getting the film at some point in March. If you're a fan of Anderson, this is a can't miss film. I love the trailer and can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Friday, March 14:
Need For Speed — Aaron Paul tries to jump start his post-"Breaking Bad" film career with this high octane action film based on the video game. There feels like nothing original here, but if the "Fast & Furious" movies are any barometer, people love good car and caper flicks. This could do well with a certain demographic.

Tyler Perry's Single Mom's Club — This latest offering from Perry looks to mix equal parts drama and comedy, though it might lean more toward being a drama. Fans of Perry — and he has a built in niche audience — will likely flock to this release.

Bad Words — This is an off-beat comedy story starring and directed by Jason Bateman. The premise seems like a stretch, but the trailer is amusing. I'm a fan of Bateman and can't wait to see what he does here.

The Veronica Mars Movie (Limited) — This film, which follows up on the cancelled TV series of the same name, was funded by fans. It starts to make it's way to the public in mid-March, but it's anyone's guess as to when it totally filters out to all the markets. But if you loved the show, this is a can't miss film.

Friday, March 21:
Divergent — This is the latest film vying to be a franchise that tackles the young adult market. Since "Harry Potter," there have been many films that have tried to capture the market share, but few successes. Again based on books, "Divergent" has more of a "Hunger Games" feel — including the casting of young up and comers with veteran actors. It also opens at around the same spot in mid-March as the first "Hunger Games" film in 2012. There is potential here.

Muppets Most Wanted — I loved the re-booted Muppets movie and the potential for a franchise. I'm sad that a lot of the team that worked on that film aren't here for this one, but Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais should up the humor. This movie is for the kid in all of us grown ups.

Friday, March 28:
Noah — I remain torn here. I like the casting and the idea we're turning Bible stories into epic films. It worked in the past, and it can work here. Still, when I think faithful Biblical narrative I don't jump to Darren Aronofsky, so it remains to be seen what he does with this film. I remain cautiously optimistic.

Sabotage — The latest action film in the comeback to acting for one-time California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. This one boasts a deep cast and could be good… or not. Hard to tell.

A Haunted House 2 — This is a sequel to the first "Haunted House" film. Expect more shenanigans from star Marlon Wayans in this one.
