Summer Movie Preview, Pt. 2

Summer is coming, time to get excited about our options. In part one I gave you the five films of May and June I'm most excited about. This time I'm looking at the five I'm most excited about in July and August. It seems like this is going to be a big summer for comedies...

July:
Tammy (July 2) — Melissa McCarthy is a gifted comedian who's coming into her own. This film — which she co-wrote with her husband Ben Falcone (the film's director) — looks like a pretty hilarious starring vehicle. Having Susan Sarandon in it is a plus. This isn't the typical film you think of on Fourth of July weekend, but that could be a good thing.

Sex Tape (July 25) — Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz had great chemistry in "Bad Teacher." It wasn't a great film, but they were great in it. That's why I'm excited to see them here together again in a set up that sounds pretty funny. The red band trailer for this movie was hilarious.

Other July Releases: Deliver Us From Evil (July 2), Earth to Echo (July 2), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (July 11), The Fluffy Movie (July 11), And So It Goes (July 11), The Purge: Anarchy (July 18), Jupiter Ascending (July 18), Planes: Fire and Rescue (July 18), Hercules (July 25), Step Up All In (July 25)

August:
Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1) — It feels weird to think that the first summer movie entry from Marvel Studios (Spiderman is a Marvel comic produced on film by Sony) comes in August. But "Guardians of the Galaxy" looks like it will be worth the wait. After a few heavy films from the Avengers world — including the most recent installments of Captain America and Thor — this looks pretty funny. "Thor: The Dark World" set up this new film, and with a cast that includes Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper, I think this could be hilarious. I am very excited for this film to drop.

Let's Be Cops (August 13) — Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. have a breezy rapport on "New Girl." They are both pretty hilarious. This is a smaller movie with a pretty bland premise, but I have hope these guys will make it pretty funny.

When The Game Stands Tall (August 22) — When sports movies hit it right, there is nothing like them. I have high hopes for this true life story of a football team that loses its 151 game winning streak and finds something beautiful inside itself. It stars Jim Caviezel and the trailer packs an emotional wallop. This should be a great way to launch into the football season.

Other August Releases: Get On Up (August 1), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8), Lucy (August 8), Into the Storm (August 8), Hundred Foot Journey (August 8), Expendables 3 (August 15), The Giver (August 15), As Above, So Below (August 15), Desert Dancer (August 15), If I Stay (August 22), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (August 22), Underdogs (August 27), November Man (August 27), Jessabelle (August 29), Jane Got A Gun (August 29)
