Upcoming Releases — June

Here's a look at what's coming up in June.

Friday, June 6:
The Fault in Our Stars — This is the latest film based on a young adult novel, but the difference here is that there is no dystopian future or supernatural lovers. Instead, it's a story about two teens stricken with cancer who fall in love and find hope despite their circumstances. This will be a tear-jerker, but it also feels like a real movie in the midst of summer.

Edge of Tomorrow — Like Adam Sandler, the name Tom Cruise is no longer the draw it once was in the heat of summer. And this film — a sci-fi action drama about a war with aliens that also has a "Groundhog Day" spin, seems complicated. I like Emily Blunt, and I think this could be watchable, but it's hard to tell how great this will be.

Friday, June 13:
22 Jump Street — Despite my trepidations, I really enjoyed the "21 Jump Street" re-boot. It's not the kind of comedy that's for everyone, but it was a lot of fun. I think this sequel will be a lot of fun, too.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 — The first "How to Train Your Dragon" film was entertaining. I didn't think it needed a sequel, but that's the world we live in today. It is nice, seven weeks into the Summer Movie Season, for parents to finally get an animated option.

Friday, June 20:
Think Like A Man Too — This is another summer sequel, this time to a sprawling ensemble romantic comedy. Those that like Kevin Hart, and this type of story, should get excited.

Jersey Boys — You don't really think of Clint Eastwood when it comes to summer movies, and "Jersey Boys" doesn't look like a typical summer movie. But there we go. This is adapted from the award-winning musical, and chronicles the history of the musical group The Four Seasons. It looks like it could be a fun and fascinating film.

The Rover — This is an indie film that features a grimy dystopian future in Australia. It feels a little bit like "Max Max" in terms of tone and plot, and features Robert Pattinson alongside Guy Pearce. It feels like a bit of odd counter programming for this point in summer.

Friday, June 27:
Transformers: Age of Extinction — A big action film from Michael Bay starting Mark Wahlberg? That is what summer is all about. This new installment of the "Transformers" world looks like a pretty reliable hit, and the only great action film in June. Wisely it's getting some distance from the big May releases, and it comes out in time for the Fourth of July.

Snowpiercer — Another dystopian future drama, this one set on a train and featuring "Captain America" himself, Chris Evans. Not sure this movie will find an audience at this point in the summer, but it is solid counter programming.
