Upcoming Releases — August

Summer's coming to a close. It's been a mediocre year at the Box Office, and usually August doesn't add to that legacy. However, this year August might be one of Summer's strongest months. Take a look at what's coming over the next five Fridays, and all the days in between.

Friday, August 1:
Guardians of the Galaxy — This hasn't been a good summer for action movies, or for superhero movies. "Guardians of the Galaxy" seems poised to change all that. It's the latest from Marvel Studios, and it looks like a fun, and funny, action adventure. I think this might end up being one of the best movies of the summer.

Get On Up — Chadwick Boseman is making a career of playing iconic African American figures in biopics. Last year it was Jackie Robinson, and now it's James Brown in this biopic "Get On Up." This feels like a more serious movie for Summer, but it also looks like it might be a good time.

Friday, August 8:
Into The Storm — It's been a while since we had a good big screen tornado movie. "Twister" came out 18 years ago… I am excited to see this movie, which looks to have great special effects, but I was more excited before I lived somewhere that gets tornados…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — This sounded like a terrible idea, and the initial trailers for this film weren't encouraging. Then a funny thing happened, the later trailers made this look kind of fun. If it captures the spirit of the original live-action "Turtles" movies, only with better special effects, this might be an entertaining action movie.

The Hundred-Foot Journey — This is another more serious movie for summer, but it also looks like some fun. I love a good, inspirational story, which this appears to be, and food movies can be fun, too. This has both. Helen Mirren is a great actress, so this should be fun counter-programming.

Wednesday, August 13:
Let's Be Cops — Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. have incredible chemistry on "New Girl." They both have a certain style of comedy that works. The trailer for this film looks suspiciously like two guys similar to their "New Girl" characters having a wild adventure. I'm all in on this. It's been a big summer for comedy films, and this looks like another winner.

Friday, August 15:
The Expendables 3 — By now we know what we're getting with these. Classic action heroes from the 1980s gather together for an old school shoot-em-up film now. It's a tired sounding premise, but somehow these movies are always fun. This one looks like it will continue the trend.

The Giver — This is the latest highly anticipated adaptation of a young adult fiction novel. It has a high profile cast that includes Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. That being said, I've watched the trailer a few times and I have no idea what this is about. I have a sneaking suspicion this will be closer to "Ender's Game" than "The Hunger Games" in quality and watchability.

Friday, August 22:
When The Game Stands Tall — This is a biopic about a California high school team that discovered what it really meant to be winners after its historic winning streak was snapped. The trailer is inspiring, I love Jim Caviezel, and I think this could be a really fun movie that gets us pumped for the NFL season to begin.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For — I didn't like the first "Sin City" film. I admired the technical achievement and cinematic style, but the story was dark, depressing, and overly filled with sex and violence. This looks to be more of the same.

If I Stay — Another young adult fiction adaptation, this one about a girl in a comma who has to decide if she wants to return to her body and continue her life. It seems kind of weird and dark, and I'm not totally sure who the target audience is.

Wednesday, August 27:
November Man — Pierce Brosnan channels his inner 007 as he plays a former CIA Agent on a mission to track a dangerous woman.

Friday, August 29:
As Above, So Below — Labor Day weekend is traditionally an awful time for new movies. It's the first weekend of the College Football season, and the last weekend of Summer, so people don't really think of the movies. And the movies are rewarding that position with an awful looking found footage film about people finding the gateway to Hell in Paris, France. I knew there was something off about the French!
