Here's a look at the new movie I saw this week.

Big Hero 6
Starring: Scott Adsit, Ryan Potter, Damon Wayans, Jr., T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, and Alan Tudyk
Synopsis: When the Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainment, it opened a new world of possibilities. Already Marvel’s heroes have moved into Disney’s theme parks in full force, and Marvel properties have moved to ABC, the Disney-owned network. But the partnership also opened the door to other creative endeavors. “Big Hero 6” is the latest feature from Disney animation — it was also inspired by an obscure Marvel comic. Fans of the comic will recognize some serious liberties have been taken, but in the process the animators at Disney have created a fun new world. Superhero films have a lot of cache at the Box Office, and “Big Hero 6” is no exception. But rather than following some of the darker, more serious elements of the source material, the movie has created a kid-friendly world and story, and the next big kid favorite in the robot Baymax. “Big Hero 6” barely resembles the world and characters of the comic books. Some of the names are the same, but the ideas and construction have been changed. All that works to create a more kid-friendly world, and it also lends itself well to an animated feature. So far 2014 has been a rough year for animation, but “Big Hero 6” goes a long way toward changing that. This is a bright, colorful movie. It’s full of rich characters, an interesting world and a good blend of drama, action and humor. The find of the film might be Baymax, an adorable looking robot with a great heart. As voiced by Adsit, Baymax is a warm, comforting presence guiding the film. In addition, the rest of the Big Hero team add to the comedic relief and round out the story. Having the film be seen through the eyes of Hiro, a teen trying to make his way in the world, helps give kids an easy access point. Most of the superhero movies made these days aim to draw in kids as well as young adults, but many of them aren’t truly kid-friendly. That’s the appeal and advantage of “Big Hero 6,” a group of heroes that are more like good-hearted goofballs than serious avengers. That gives the film and the world a different kind of vibe, one that will be appealing to kids and parents. I could see this film being the start of a new animated franchise. And, based on the first installment, I can’t wait to see what they do next.
Rating: PG for action and peril, some rude humor, and thematic elements.
Verdict: Three stars out of four.

Upcoming Releases:
