Upcoming Releases — March

Here's a look at the new movies opening this March. As has been true so far in 2015, it looks like a mixed bag.

Friday, March 6:
Chappie — This is the latest from writer/director Neil Blomkamp, who gave the world "District 9" and "Elysium." It's about a robot who learns to think, and the people who want to stop that progress. It has what appears to be a good cast, but I can't get excited about it based on his previous films.

Unfinished Business — It feels like this comedy — which stars Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco, and Tom Wilkinson — has kind of come in under the radar. It feels like an odd group in the cast, and like this has the potential for comedy disaster.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — This sequel seems unnecessary to me. The first movie was a small delight that should have been allowed to exist on its own. But this has a good cast and will likely be charming and fun.

Friday, March 13:
Cinderella — This is the live-action adaptation of the famous Disney animated feature. It is also accompanied with a new, original "Frozen" short, which should help pack theaters.

Run All Night — Now, not content just to ham it up as an action star in the "Taken" series, Liam Neeson is again a super action hero trying to save his family from the mob in this movie. It's time for Liam to find new movies to be in. Let's start the campaign — #FreeLiamNeeson.

Friday, March 20:
Insurgent — This is the second film in the "Divergent" series. I don't think "Divergent" was as good as "The Hunger Games," but it's interesting and I'm curious to see where this dystopian YA series is headed.

The Gunman — This is the latest action film from the director of the original "Taken" film, this time starring Sean Penn. Will Penn be the latest actor of a certain age to become an action star? Only time will tell.

Friday, March 27:
Home — The first major animated release of the year ("Sponge Bob" was an animated/live-action hybrid), this one is about an alien race that comes to Earth in search of a new home. Jim Parsons and Steve Martin provide voices here. This is logically timed to come during Spring Break.

Get Hard — This is a comedy, featuring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell, about a white-collar criminal trying to prepare for prison. Hilarity might ensue (but I wouldn't bet on it…).
