Emmy Nomination Reactions

The Emmy Nominations were announced on Thursday, and as always there are some curious omissions and some nice surprises. Below is a look at what we got.

Drama Series Nominees: An interesting mix, and wither network drama. No drama on one of the four major networks was nominated. Meanwhile, shows like "Homeland," which had a better season but not a great season, "Downton Abbey," and "House of Cards" feel like they're coasting on their reputation. "Better Call Saul" might be benefitting from "Breaking Bad" love, too. For my money, "Game of Thrones" is the best show in the category.

Comedy Series Nominees: I really think in "VEEP," "Silicon Valley" and "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" that the Emmys have the three best comedies of the year nominated. Hard to say which is the best, or which could win. I am just hoping the Emmy gives up on its perpetual love of "Modern Family."

Limited Series Nominees: With no "Fargo" or "True Detective" to eat up nominations here, there are some interesting choices. "American Horror Story"might be a favorite, but I thought it was a down season. I really liked what "American Crime" did, and I could see that winning. "The Honourable Woman" is also an outside contender to win.

Variety Series Nominees: Will the Emmys shower Jon Stewart with love since he's retiring? I could see that, but for my money this award belongs to "Last Week Tonight," which is one of the best shows on TV.

Pleasant Surprises: Tatiana Maslany finally gets the recognition she deserves for her work on "Orphan Black." The second and third seasons haven't been as good in terms of story, but what Maslany does is unlike anything on TV. Also, I was thrilled to see the love for "The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," which was my favorite new show of the year, and for Ben Mendelsohn, who was the best thing in "Bloodline." Also, the three nominees from "Game of Thrones," Peter Dinkledge, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke, are all deserving. I'm torn between rooting for Headey or Clarke for Best Supporting Actress.

Unfortunate Omissions: For all the love of "Kimmy Schmidt," the woman herself — Ellie Kemper — was left out. That's terrible, since she makes the show go. Also, "Empire" was highly entertaining and a revolution for network TV, so I find it hard to believe it couldn't make the drama field. It is certainly more deserving than many of the nominees. Finally, "Hannibal" is an incredible show with incredible performances. It's too bad it can't get some Emmy love.
