Upcoming Releases — October

We are almost to October, which means the award-worthy movies are just around the corner. Here's a look at what's coming next month.

Friday, October 2:
The Martian — This looks like a great story. Based on a novel, it's about an astronaut (Matt Damon) left behind on Mars, and the team that has to rescue him. This is the first big release that feels like it has serious Oscar buzz.

Legend — This is an interesting gangster film based on a true story. The fascinating hook here is Tom Hardy in a double role as a pair of twins here.

Friday, October 9:
Pan — This is the latest take on the story of "Peter Pan." I like what director Joe Wright has done in the past, so I'm looking forward to this film.

Steve Jobs — Jobs is an imposing historical figure. I am really looking forward to this film, which boasts an impressive cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, and Jeff Daniels.

Big Stone Gap — This is a romance film starring Ashley Judd. It's been under the radar a lot, in fact I haven't seen a single trailer for it. That's troubling.

Friday, October 16:
Bridge of Spies — The combination of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks should be enough to sell this. But it also boasts a fascinating true life story. I think this will be a good one.

Freeheld — This is another true story, this one about a lesbian cop fighting for equal rights. It stars Julianne Moore and has lofty Oscar aspirations.

Goosebumps — October is the month where Halloween takes place. In case you forgot, here's one to celebrate the season aimed at kids and based on the popular children's books.

Crimson Peak — And here's a prestige horror movie for adults. This one comes from a good pedigree and boasts a strong cast. It looks sufficiently creepy if you're in the mood for that.

Friday, October 23:
The Last Witch Hunter — This one stars Vin Diesel and looks like a bit of a seasonal offering. It's a hybrid action-horror, and looks like a marginal film.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension — Speaking of marginal horror movies… this is a continuation of the found footage series.

Jem and the Holograms — This is based on a 1980s cartoon and likely aimed at those looking for a piece of nostalgia and kids.

Burnt — This film, starring Bradley Cooper as a tempermental chef, looks like a winner. Directed by John Wells this could be a sneaky contender in awards season.

Rock the Kasbah — This off-beat comedy stars Bill Murray as a down and out music producer trapped in Afghanistan. Hilarity ensues.

Friday, October 30:
Our Brand is Crisis — This is a prestige drama starring Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton. This looks like another excellent October offering.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse — Another offering that feels seasonal, this is a horror comedy for those looking for an alternative to Trick-or-Treating.
