Upcoming Releases — December

We've reached December and, therefore, the end of the year. There are plenty of great holiday movies yet to come!

Friday, December 4:
Krampus — This is the latest Christmas themed film — this one a horror movie. For those who are in the mood for something different, this could be fascinating.

Lady in the Van — This is a comedy starring the great Maggie Smith as, literally, an older lady living in a van. Expect some laughs and plenty of pathos from this movie, based on a true story.

Christmas Eve — Another holiday film event, this a more traditional comedy/romance. In the grand tradition of New Year's Eve and "Valentine's Day," this is a movie about a bunch of people enduring life changing events on Christmas Eve.

Friday, December 11:
In the Heart of the Sea — This film from director Ron Howard stars Chris Hemsworth in the true life story that inspired Moby Dick. It looks like a great film and potential Oscar bait.

Friday, December 18:
Star Wars: Episode VII, The Force Awakens — The long awaited sequel to "Return of the Jedi" is here. If you see one movie in December, it should be this. J.J. Abrams did wonders in bringing the "Star Trek" film franchise back to life, and I see good things happening here.

Sisters — If you see only two movies in December, this should be the other won. When Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in a movie together, good things happen. That will be the case here, too.

Wednesday, December 23:
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip — By now, we all know what these movies are. They're OK for kids and barely tolerable for adults. Merry Christmas.

The Big Short — You wouldn't think of Adam McKay when getting a director for a movie about the financial crisis. But it seems to have worked here, in a film featuring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Christian Bale.

Friday, December 25
Joy — This is the latest collaboration between Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell. The film also features Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper and looks like a strong Oscar contender.

Daddy's Home — A Christmas comedy featuring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. Looks like some holiday laughs.

Concussion — This is probably not the film the NFL wants you to be thinking about during its stretch drive to the playoffs, but this film takes a hard look at CTE and the cover up in the NFL. It's an important film featuring a motivated Will Smith.

Point Break — Did this movie need to be re-made? No. Should it have been? No. Will it be good. I don't think so. But if you want to see extreme sports spectacle, you're welcome.

The Hateful Eight (Limited) — This is the latest from director Quentin Tarantino and it looks like it could be one of his better efforts. It has a spectacular cast.

The Revenant (Limited) — This is the latest from Oscar winner Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It looks like a sure Oscar nominee.
