Academy Award Previews — Brooklyn


We are a month away from the biggest day in entertainment, The Academy Awards. As such, I'll be previewing the awards, including recaps of all the Best Picture nominees, all leading up to final award picks and predictions from me on February 28.

Nominated For: Best Picture, Best Actress (Ronan), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby)
About: "Brooklyn" might have been a bit of a surprise as a Best Picture nominee. It has flown a bit under the radar, save for nominations for Ronan. But in the end, it made the final list of eight nominees for the Academy Awards. But that's not sure bet that it wins anything. It's only nominated for three awards, and I wouldn't consider it a favorite in any category. For "Brooklyn," simply being nominated for Best Picture — and the bump it gives films at the Box Office — will likely be the victory. This is a beautifully told story of a young Irish girl who comes to America for a better life and is soon torn between her promising American future and the pulls of the home she left behind. It's beautifully shot and acted. Ronan does an incredible job in the lead role, and I was compelled by the story and the way it was told here. "Brooklyn" is based on the novel from Colm Tóibín, and it's adapted beautifully by Hornby, who is nominated for an Academy Award. This is the kind of engrossing personal tale that should be highlighted by the Academy. That being said, I think it's an extreme long shot for Best Picture. I would also put Ronan third in the race for Actress behind fellow nominees Cate Blanchett and Brie Larson. In the screenplay category, I think Hornby faces an up hill battle, too. So barring some major upsets, "Brooklyn" will likely go home empty handed on February 28.
Rating: PG - 13 for a scene of sexuality and brief strong language.
Verdict: Four stars out of four.

Broncos Draft Targets

  The NFL Draft is just a few days away. On April 25, the Denver Broncos will head into the draft in the midst of something of a rebuild. In the draft, the Broncos have the No. 12 pick in Round 1, then have a Third Round Pick, Fourth Round Pick, three Fifth Round Picks, a Sixth Round Pick, and a Seventh Round Pick. So, what might they be targeting? Let's dive in and look at possible positions. Quarterback : The team clearly needs a long-term quarterback. Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci are there but the team could certainly use someone else. Could they move up for Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Yes, they could. Will the take Bo Nix at 12? It's possible. Or will the Broncos wait until next off-season to make a move? Anything is in play for the Broncos in 2024, but quarterback is surely a need.
