Summer Movie Preview, Pt. 1

Summer is coming. On the calendar it's usually Memorial Day Weekend (or late June if you're a purist). But at the movies, it's May 1. We have four months of summer blockbusters to fill those long, hot days. Over the next two days, I'll be highlighting 10 films that we can look forward to this Summer (five from May and June and five from July and August). First up is out early summer releases.

May:
Captain America: Civil War, May 6
About: This is the beginning of Marvel's Phase 3, and it promises to change the face of cinematic universe forever. This one pits out heroes against one-another after the government proposes restrictions, Iron Man agrees and Captain America rebels. Time to pick sides, but no matter what the fans win as this blockbuster kicks off summer 2016.

Money Monster, May 13
About: Most of the time summer movies break down into basic categories — action films, superhero films, R-rated comedies, and animated films. But "Money Monster" doesn't fit into any of those categories. It looks like a more serious adult film that takes on the corruption in our financial markets. It stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts and comes from director Jodie Foster. This looks like a more serious film that will add depth to summer.

The Nice Guys, May 20
About: This is the latest film from Shane Black, who originally wrote "Lethal Weapon" and delivered one of my all time favorites, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." This looks like it could be a little bit like that. It stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, and the trailer makes it look like an ideal blend of comedy and action. This is the kind of movie you want during summer.

X-Men: Apocalypse, May 27
About: This is the latest "X-Men" film. This promises some of the biggest stakes as our heroes battle Apocalypse. Bryan Singer is back to direct, as is the cast from "First Class." This could be the last film with this group of stars, and it looks like a good action film.

Other May Releases: "The Darkness" (May 13), "Angry Birds" (May 20), "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" (May 20); "Alice Through the Looking Glass" (May 27)

June:
The Free State of Jones, June 24
About: This film, which stars Matthew McConaughey, is based on the book of the same name about Newton Knight, a Mississippi resident who led a revolt against the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was pro abolition and even married an African American woman. I loved the book and I can't wait to see how the film adaptation works.

Other June Releases: "Me Before You" (June 3); "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" (June 3); "The Bye Bye Man" (June 3); "Warcraft" (June 10); "Now You See Me 2" (June 10); "The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Experiment" (June 10); "Finding Dory" (June 17); "Central Intelligence" (June 17); "Independence Day 2: Resurgence" (June 24); "The Shallows" (June 24)
