Superhero Movie Countdown — No. 7

Today on the countdown I pivot to one of the most interesting entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No. 7 — Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Starring: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, and Sebastian Stan
Director: The Russo Brothers
Quote: "Attention all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, this is Steve Rogers. You're heard a lot about me over the last few days. Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time to tell the truth. S.H.I.E.L.D. is not what we thought it was. It's been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader. The S.T.R.I.K.E. and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want. Absolute control. They shot Nick Fury. And it won't end there. If you launch those helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not." — Captain America
About: Game-changers don't get much bigger than what happened in the second Captain America film. In "Winter Soldier" Steve Rogers (Evans) is reunited with his friend, who he thought was dead, and finds that S.H.I.E.L.D. and everything he thought he knew is a lie. The film had huge ramifications that rippled throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and into the world of TV, where "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." had a major course correction, too. For that reason alone it would stand out. But this movie also has a great quality about it. Captain America has never been my favorite of the Avengers world, but he does get some of the better movies. His origin story was a pitch-perfect World War II story. This second film is like a spy thriller, at times, while being a faithful comic book movie. It's a credit to Evans as an actor, and his range, that he can do so much in these films. It's not my favorite Marvel film, but it might be their best. It's certainly worth checking out.
Rating: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, gunplay and action throughout.
