Upcoming Releases — August


We're cruising to the end of summer. August tends to be an up-and-down month for movies. Kids go back to school, sports heats up, and the movies wind down as they wrap up blockbuster season and prepare for the fall lull before holiday movie and award movie season. Here's a look at what to expect in August.

Friday, August 5:
Suicide Squad — This is probably the biggest, and best, summer movie left. There's a lot riding on this unconventional superhero team from D.C. Comics. I expect big things, and there's a lot of expectations here.

Nine Lives — Kevin Spacey deserves better than this flaccid children's tale about a self-centered man taught a lesson about family when he's transported into the body of a cat. The audience deserves better, too.

Friday, August 12:
Pete's Dragon — This re-make of the Disney classic will benefit from better special effects and performances from Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford. This could be a sleeper gem of late summer.

Sausage Party — This adult cartoon from Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill features food learning what happens when they go home from the store. It looks raunchy, but maybe in a fun way.

Florence Jenkins Foster — A biopic starring Meryl Streep. It seems oddly timed being dumped into the end of the summer movie season. I'm skeptical, but it could be a nice change of pace.

Friday, August 19:
Ben-Hur — This is a re-make of a classic Charleton Heston film. It's got serious religious undertones and the potential to be a decent action film.

War Dogs — Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star in this biopic about a couple young men who became the biggest arms dealers in the history of the United States. I'm curious about the story and also interested to see the performances in this film.

Kubo and the Two Strings — This is another animated film, but it looks a little deeper and more high brow than some of the animated movies we've seen this summer. It features the voices of Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey.

Friday, August 26:
Mechanic: Resurrection — This is a sequel to the action series featuring Jason Statham. This is about the level of film you'd expect the last weekend in August.

Don't Breathe — Another late summer staple, the low-budget horror film. This doesn't have a big cast, but could draw plenty of young adults and teens eager for a break from school.

Broncos Draft Targets

  The NFL Draft is just a few days away. On April 25, the Denver Broncos will head into the draft in the midst of something of a rebuild. In the draft, the Broncos have the No. 12 pick in Round 1, then have a Third Round Pick, Fourth Round Pick, three Fifth Round Picks, a Sixth Round Pick, and a Seventh Round Pick. So, what might they be targeting? Let's dive in and look at possible positions. Quarterback : The team clearly needs a long-term quarterback. Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci are there but the team could certainly use someone else. Could they move up for Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Yes, they could. Will the take Bo Nix at 12? It's possible. Or will the Broncos wait until next off-season to make a move? Anything is in play for the Broncos in 2024, but quarterback is surely a need. Tight End: The team brought back Adam Trautman and still has Greg Dulcich, but it's still a need. Dulcich hasn't been able to get on the field and Trautman hasn't been great. Co

  Do you like a good Western? It's a classic genre in film and this year I've decided to look at some of my favorite Westerns. True Grit (1969) Starring : John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, and Dennis Hopper Director : Henry Hathaway About: This is the third straight week with a film from Wayne. As you might guess, we're not done. As I've mentioned, he sets a standard for the genre. Here, we seen him bring to life an iconic character. This one is based on a novel, and it has endured. He's great as Rooster Cogburn, so good that he got a sequel in the same character. But this is a later film in his career. This is a different, more grizzled Wayne.
