2016 Broncos Season, Week Eight


The Broncos earned a measure of revenge, besting the Chargers on Sunday.

Week Eight: Broncos 27, San Diego Chargers 16
Season Record: 6-2 (4-1 Home)
Key Play: In the fourth quarter, with the Broncos leading 27-16 and the Chargers facing fourth and goal at the two yard line, Phillip Rivers dropped back to pass and it was broken up by Lorenzo Doss, preserving the eight point lead. The Broncos held on to win.

Recap: Sometimes you have to win ugly games, and the Broncos certainly did that on Sunday. Trevor Siemian struggled, much more than it shows in the box score. He was lucky not to have a few passes picked off, and he was woefully inaccurate on some deep passes. In addition, at times the defense struggled to contain the Chargers' offense, including on a 98-yard drive in the third quarter. But you play to win the game, and the Broncos won to move to 6-2 and remain in a first place tie with the Raiders — who they play on Sunday. The fact that Kubiak was critical of the offense after the game is also a good sign. He is motivated to make it work, and I think it will get better. At least the Broncos had some fire and were able to best the Chargers in this second go around.

Game Balls:
* Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. The receivers are clearly frustrated, but they also made some good plays, each catching tough downfield throws. DT finished with five grabs for 79 yards while Sanders caught four for 68 yards.
* Broncos' secondary. The secondary came to play Sunday. Though Aqib Talib missed the game, and Kayvon Webster was hurt early, the Broncos were able to pick off three Rivers passes, one returns for a touchdown, one setting up a touchdown and another that should have, were it not for a Devontae Booker fumble. The best offense is a good defense, and Denver had that Sunday.
* Broncos front. Jared Crick, Derek Wolfe, Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware made life miserable for Rivers, and it helped the Broncos get the win. We missed Ware.

Lingering Concerns:
* Siemian needs to improve. He has struggled to throw downfield and with some of his pocket presence.
* Running Game. The Broncos running game was again woeful Sunday, and Kubiak said as much. I like Booker, but he need to pick it up.
* Offensive Line. I can't help but think this is at the root of a lot of our problems on offense. It needs work...

Broncos Draft Targets

  The NFL Draft is just a few days away. On April 25, the Denver Broncos will head into the draft in the midst of something of a rebuild. In the draft, the Broncos have the No. 12 pick in Round 1, then have a Third Round Pick, Fourth Round Pick, three Fifth Round Picks, a Sixth Round Pick, and a Seventh Round Pick. So, what might they be targeting? Let's dive in and look at possible positions. Quarterback : The team clearly needs a long-term quarterback. Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci are there but the team could certainly use someone else. Could they move up for Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Yes, they could. Will the take Bo Nix at 12? It's possible. Or will the Broncos wait until next off-season to make a move? Anything is in play for the Broncos in 2024, but quarterback is surely a need.
