2016 Broncos Season, Week Seven


After two losses in five days, the Broncos took 11 days to prepare for the return of Brock Osweiler Monday night. It was time well spent.

Week Seven: Denver Broncos 27, Houston Texans 9
Season Record: 5-2 (3-1 Home)
Key Play: In the third quarter, with the Broncos leading 14-9, the Texans were driving. Alfred Blue carried the ball and fumbled, which was recovered by Todd Davis. The Broncos took the ball down for a touchdown following the fumble, giving them a 21-9 lead and putting the game out of reach.

Recap: ESPN had some fun marketing this game, using a catchy Third Eye Blind song and making the ads all about Brock and John Elway. It turned out to be apt. The Broncos have had this one circled on their calendar for months, and the team delivered. The offense looked robust, and the defense squelched any progress that the Texans tried to make. Sure, the defense didn't get a sack of Osweiler, and that's a bummer. But Brock couldn't move the ball, and the Texans offense looked stagnant as well. More importantly, the Broncos got the win, moved closer to a sweep of the AFC South, and stayed in a tie with the Raiders atop the AFC West. Now they have a short week, just six days, to prep for the San Diego Chargers, who are riding a two-game winning streak thanks to besting the Broncos on October 13 and beating the Atlanta Falcons Sunday. It's an important game for the Broncos.

Game Balls:
* CJ Anderson and Devontae Booker. Maybe it takes two? Anderson had 107 yards and a touchdown, while Booker had 83 yards and a touchdown. Both looked good.
* Denver's Defense. This is a team award, and frankly it's deserved after seeing the Texans' offense yesterday.

Lingering Questions:
* Penalties. This is a big one, and an important one. We've got to get that cleaned up, especially the killer offensive penalties that halt forward progress.
* Offensive Line. The line was better last night. After a slow start, they stopped the penalties and started opening holes. That needs to continue, and it bears watching this season.

Broncos Draft Targets

  The NFL Draft is just a few days away. On April 25, the Denver Broncos will head into the draft in the midst of something of a rebuild. In the draft, the Broncos have the No. 12 pick in Round 1, then have a Third Round Pick, Fourth Round Pick, three Fifth Round Picks, a Sixth Round Pick, and a Seventh Round Pick. So, what might they be targeting? Let's dive in and look at possible positions. Quarterback : The team clearly needs a long-term quarterback. Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci are there but the team could certainly use someone else. Could they move up for Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Yes, they could. Will the take Bo Nix at 12? It's possible. Or will the Broncos wait until next off-season to make a move? Anything is in play for the Broncos in 2024, but quarterback is surely a need.
