Upcoming Releases — September, 2017

Summer has slipped away, as has the summer movie season. The Fall Movie season really doesn't pick up until October, so where does that leave us when it comes to this month? Well, September is kind of a mixed bag, as you'll see below.

Friday, September 8:
IT — The newest version of Stephen King's classic novel has kids terrorized by a clown (pictured above, you're welcome). Frankly, you had me at clown. This is supposed to be incredibly scary. I don't want to see it, but I know I will...
Home Again — This is a new romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon, and it looks in trailers like it wants to be a James L. Brooks movie in the worst way. This will be a nice alternative to "IT" though.

Friday, September 15:
American Assassin — This film, starring Michael Keaton as a CIA trainer and Dylan O'Brien as the wounded soul who becomes his latest trainee. This looks like a an interesting premise with a good cast.
Mother! — Darren Aronofsky's latest looks like what you'd expect from the director. What fascinates me is that, while I don't always like the choices, I applaud Jennifer Lawrence for constantly taking unexpected parts. This certainly looks unexpected.
All I See Is You — This movie stars Blake Lively as a blind woman dependent on her husband (Jason Clarke) to navigate the streets of Bangkok. There's potential here, but not much of a marketing campaign, so I'm left to wonder a bit.

Friday, September 22:
Kingsman: The Golden Circle — The first "Kingsman" movie was a good mix of action and comedy, and this second one looks like more of the same. This might be one of the highlights of September.
Battle of the Sexes — This biopic looks at the famous match between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs, played here by Emma Stone and Steve Carell. This seems like it might be a lot of fun.
The Lego Ninjago Movie — The Lego Movie was a revelation when it debuted a few years back, then came Lego Batman in February, which was great. Now the Lego animated universe expands with Ninjago, which has a great trailer and looks like a lot of fun.
Stronger — This is a biopic about Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the Boston Marathon Bombing. The film features Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany and looks like an early entry in the fall awards contender competition.
Brad's Status — This is described as a "bittersweet" comedy from writer/director Mike White, and starring Ben Stiller. I haven't seen much about the film, so it's hard to get a read on how it will play in an increasingly crowded late September lineup.

Friday, September 29:
Flatliners — This re-make of the 1980s film starring Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland features a group of medical school students flatlining to see who happens after you die. The cast is led by Ellen Page and, based on the trailers, this looks like more of a horror movie that what I remember of the original.
American Made — This Tom Cruise film is a true story about an America pilot who works for the CIA on a number of dubious covert missions in the 1980s. There's some potential here, but I don't get a great read from the trailer. Maybe it's hard for Cruise to get "The Mummy" stink off him.
