2017 Broncos' Season, Week 2


The Broncos are 2-0, and they won in impressive and explosive fashion at home on Sunday.

Week 2: Broncos 42, Dallas Cowboys 17
Season Record: 2-0 (2-0 Home)
Key Play: In the third quarter, leading 28-10 and following a Chris Harris, Jr., interception, CJ Anderson took a hand-off 23 yards to the house for a touchdown, making it 35-10 and effectively putting the game away.

Recap: At the very least the expectation was that the game with the Dallas Cowboys would be a rough one. The thought was that the Broncos would be tested, particularly by running back Ezekiel Elliot and the Cowboys' stout offensive line. That didn't really happen, at least not in the way most expected. The Cowboys were sometimes close on the scoreboard, but they never really seemed to be in the game. After tying it 7-7 in the early going of the second quarter, they never came close to tying it again. And, in fact, the Broncos seemed to win going away, opening a 25-point lead in the third quarter and salting the game away with a 103-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That's dominance, and a good look against a team that was the top seed in the NFC last season. Better still, the Broncos held Elliot to just eight yards rushing on nine carries, showing that at long last they may have figured out how to clamp down on the run. The Broncos also forced two interceptions and, aside from a couple busted plays, looked good in pass defense as well. But, most importantly, Trevor Siemian continues to grow and thrive, tossing four touchdown passes in this game. And the running game is back, too. Anderson had two touchdowns on the day and rushed for more than 100 yards. Through two weeks, the Broncos look great, which is key since the Chiefs and Raiders don't appear to have slowed down.

Game Balls:
* CJ Anderson. Anderson has been much maligned for not living up to expectation and staying healthy the past two years. It's somewhat hard to argue with that. But when he's fully healthy and strong, he's a beast. We saw that Sunday, as he rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 36 yards and another touchdown.
* Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.The Broncos' top two pass catchers were in top form Sunday. Thomas caught six passes for 71 yards, and looked fierce. Sanders, meanwhile, finally connect with Siemian, catching six passes for 62 yards and two big touchdowns.
* Chris Harris, Jr., and Aqib Talib. Harris and Talib shined on Sunday, both grabbing key interceptions. Harris' interception set up the CJ Anderson touchdown, while Talib's interception went 103 yards for a touchdown to salt the game away.
* Von Miller. Much was made of Miller's five games without a sack. And that was probably rough for him. But he's remained fierce, stopping people in the running game and finishing just a hair away from a big play. Sunday he got two, sacking Dak Prescott twice in the Broncos' win.

Lingering Concerns:
* Finishing the Game Strong. The Broncos have had times in both games where the effort appeared to lag, allowing the teams to get back into it. That was nearly very costly against the Chargers, but the Broncos responded better against the Cowboys. Still, it's something to watch going forward.
* Health. Garrett Bolles was injured on Sunday and may miss time. Ronald Leary was in and out of the lineup, too. The Broncos need a strong offensive line to thrive, and right now health is a serious issue and question.

Broncos Draft Targets

  The NFL Draft is just a few days away. On April 25, the Denver Broncos will head into the draft in the midst of something of a rebuild. In the draft, the Broncos have the No. 12 pick in Round 1, then have a Third Round Pick, Fourth Round Pick, three Fifth Round Picks, a Sixth Round Pick, and a Seventh Round Pick. So, what might they be targeting? Let's dive in and look at possible positions. Quarterback : The team clearly needs a long-term quarterback. Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci are there but the team could certainly use someone else. Could they move up for Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Yes, they could. Will the take Bo Nix at 12? It's possible. Or will the Broncos wait until next off-season to make a move? Anything is in play for the Broncos in 2024, but quarterback is surely a need.
