2017 Broncos' Season, Bye Week Hopes

The Denver Broncos will begin their post-bye portion of the season tomorrow night as they host the New York Giants. But heading into the bye, the team was a Top 5 squad in the NFL, going 3-1 and, at times, looking unstoppable. It's also fair to argue they haven't played a complete four quarter game yet, so here's three hopes for the rest of the season.

1. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders get more involved. The Broncos are winning. That's important. And I don't want to diminish that. But DT and Sanders have complained about not being more involved, and that's a fair point. They are two of the best receivers in the NFL, and yet it seems like the offense has somewhat passed them over. In fact, DT hasn't scored a TD yet this season. That's got to change, and I think it could change as early as Sunday night.

2. Get healthy and stay that way. The Broncos have struggled with injuries pre-season and early in the season, and the injuries have come where the team was already thin — at outside linebacker, defensive line, and offensive line. Menelik Watson and Garrett Boles should be healthy, Ronald Leary, too. And that's key. It will be good to get Shane Ray back and players like Jake Butt into rotation. Injuries can be the difference between a great team and a team that can't make the playoffs. The Broncos need to stay strong over a grueling final 12 weeks thanks to the early bye.

3. Can anyone catch the Chiefs? The Chiefs have been the best team in the NFL through five weeks, and are the NFL's only unbeaten team. Provided they stay that way for two more weeks, which seems reasonable, the Broncos will stroll into Arrowhead on October 30 facing a perfect team. The fact the Chiefs are in the Broncos' division makes it even rougher. If the Broncos can't catch and pass the Chiefs, then the best we can hope for is a Wild Card berth and three playoff games on the road. That's a tough path to take.
