2017 Broncos' Season, Week 7

Well, that happened. For the first time since 1978, we were shut out against the Chargers. What a day for the Broncos.

Week 7: Los Angeles Chargers 21, Broncos 0
Season Record: 3-3 (3-1 Home)
Key Play: Early in the first quarter, on a punt, the Broncos kicked it to Travis Benjamin, who returned the punt 65 yards for a touchdown to put the Chargers up 7-0. That, as it turns out, would have been enough.

Recap: The Broncos look bad. I joked that they've taken three straight bye weeks, which is funny, but it's also not funny. The Broncos were off during Week 5 then failed to show up for winable games against the Giants (Week 6) and Chargers (Week 7), and now find themselves at 3-3 and quickly slipping from playoff consideration. I'm not impressed by Vance Joseph and even less impressed by Mike McCoy and his "work" with the offense. Of course there are still problems. The offensive line has never been repaired and Trevor Siemian is, at the very least, not progressing. But the playcalling is a problem, too. To start the game yesterday, they showed a graphic that the Broncos are 3-0 when CJ Anderson gets 20 or more carries. Yesterday he got 10, many of those coming when the game was already seemingly lost in the fourth quarter. What is the plan here? What is the goal here? And let's not forget the dreadful Special Teams play the past few weeks. Also, while I applaud fixing the run defense, the Broncos seem more vulnerable than ever to big passing plays against the safeties. I like Justin Simmons and his potential, but he and Will Parks have seemed like they're not ready for Prime Time this season, and it shows. It was an ugly loss Sunday in what's quickly becoming an ugly season. Now the Broncos head to Kansas City on Monday night, travel to the Philadelphia Eagles on November 5 and then return home to face the Patriots. This team could be 3-6 before Thanksgiving, at which point we have to start thinking about the future. The fact there are people that are agitating for Brock Osweiler to start in Denver shows just how far we've slipped.

Game Balls:
* Von Miller. Von had two more sacks on Sunday, now with seven on the season. He's trying his best despite a mediocre team, and has moved up in the team's record books. I hate that we're wasting his prime and the prime of people like Brandon Marshall, Derek Wolfe and Chris Harris, Jr.

Lingering Concerns:
* Injuries. The Broncos are now getting beat up. We're thin at receiver and offensive line, and the team potentially lost Todd Davis on Sunday after losing Corey Nelson during the week. Injuries are something we can ill afford.
* No presence on offense. The line is part of it, sure, but so is Siemian, the playcalling and a lot more. This team might be worse than last year, and that's really saying something.
* No heart. The Broncos don't appear to have a lot of heart anywhere but among a few defensive players. They look back and like they're just going through the motions.
