Upcoming Releases — December, 2017

We've reached the final month of the year. December offers a mixture of holiday and event films, as well as films competing for Oscars. It also features a number of limited releases, some of which I'll chronicle here in case you can find a place to catch it.

Friday, December 1:
He's Out There — The lone wide release on the first Friday in December is a horror movie about a mother and kids trapped in a spooky lake house. Merry Christmas...

Friday, December 8:
The Disaster Artist — This film from James Franco (he directs and stars) gets a wide expansion on December 8. It's a biopic that tells the story of the labor of love that it took to make one of the worst movies ever made.

I, Tonya (Limited) — This biopic of Tonya Harding starring Margot Robbie and Alison Janey is a strong contender for awards this year. It's also supposed to be one of the year's best.

The Shape of Water (Limited) — Another limited release, this one starring Sally Hawkins and from director Guillermo Del Toro. This is a period piece and a monster movie, of sorts, but one with a beautiful love story at its core.

Friday, December 15:
Star Wars: The Last Jedi — This is most hotly anticipated film of the month, and possibly the year. Director Rian Johnson takes the next installment in the trilogy for a film that some are saying might be the best "Star Wars" film of all time. I. Can't. Wait.

Ferdinand— John Cena is secretly a comedy star. This new animated film lets him showcase his comedy skills and voice talents among a great cast. This is a great family film timed for the holiday.

Gotti— This biopic of John Gotti stars John Travolta and Kelly Preston. It's released near the end of the year, but it has little buzz and doesn't seem like it's going to reach lofty heights this award season.

Wednesday, December 20:
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — This follow up to "Jumanji" sets the action in a video game, where four teens get sucked in and forced to compete for their lives as their avatars. The primary cast — Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karan Gillian — looks pretty great, too.

The Greatest Showman on Earth — This musical features Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron and tells the story of P.T. Barnum. Originally slated for Christmas Day, this looks like a perfect holiday treat.

Friday, December 22:
Pitch Perfect 3 — This third film from the "Pitch Perfect" team finds the ladies out of school and looking for direction in life. It will be wonderful to have this movie back in our lives.

Father Figures — Owen Wilson and Ed Helms star as a pair of middle age men searching for their father after their mother (Glen Close) narrows it down to four or five guys, including Terry Bradshaw as himself.

Downsizing — Matt Damon stars in the latest film from Alexander Payne, set in a world where people can undergo the process of shrinking in order to live the life of their dreams.

The Post — This film, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, is about the Pentagon Papers. This looks like potentially one of the best movies of the year.

Monday, December 25:
Molly's Game (Limited) — This film from writer/director Aaron Sorkin centers on the true story of a young woman who ran the biggest underground poker game in the country.

Phantom Thread (Limited) — The latest film from P.T. Anderson also features what might be the final performance from Daniel Day Lewis. Expect this one to be a player come Oscar season.
