Best of 2017, Top Episodes

The Meme gives it away, but a special episode of "Game of Thrones" is on this list. Today I continue my best of 2017 with my favorite TV Episodes of 2017. The list is below, in ascending order.

10. "Vergangenheit," episode 2.06 "The Crown" — The second season of "The Crown" wasn't quite as good as season one, but this was an excellent episode that really served as a showcase for Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth and Alex Jennings as The Duke of Windsor. I really enjoyed the historical context, too.

9. "Crisis on Earth X," D.C. TV Universe — This is really four episodes, the eighth episode of the current seasons of "Supergirl," "Arrow," "The Flash," and "D.C.'s Legends of Tomorrow," but it's really one continuous movie. And it was awesome. It was some of the most fun I had watching TV this year.

8. "Chapter 6," 1.06 "Legion" — In a show that was weird and freakish, this was one of the strangest and most thrilling episodes because it took everyone into David's (Dan Stevens) mind. This was a moment when I thought the show jumped to a new level.

7. "Janet and Michael," 2.06 "The Good Place" — This is a series that has had a remarkable second season with a lot of twists.  But this was the best, as it was a fantastic showcase for D'Arcy Carden as Janet and Ted Danson as Michael. In a very funny show, this one was hilarious.

6. "Tape 6, Side A," 1.11 "13 Reasons Why" — Throughout the series, it was fair to wonder what Clay (Dylan Minnette) did to end up on the tapes. In one of the most emotional hours of an incredibly gutting series, we find out. It was one of the most heart-breaking hours of the series.

5. "Certified," 3.06 "The Leftovers" — Amy Brenneman's Laurie was one of the most under-rated performers in this series, and this episode was a beautiful and heart-breaking showcase for her character in the final season.

4. "Goodwill," 4.08 "Halt and Catch Fire" — You could make a case for a number of episodes, but I'm going with "Goodwill." At the end of the seventh episode, Gordon (Scoot McNairy) unexpectedly passes away, and this eighth episode is where all the characters have a chance to grieve and remember. And it's beautiful.

3. "Mindflayer," 3.08 "Stranger Things 2" — Not everyone loved the second season of "Stranger Things," but I did. It had its highs and lows, but this episode is where they all come back together and has a great moment or two for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).

2. "The Spoils of War," 7.04 "Game of Thrones" — There were some incredible episodes in season seven, but this was by far the best. It was an episode full of great and beautiful moments. Sansa (Sophie Turner) and Arya (Maisie Williams) reunited, and Arya got a fascinating duel with Brianne (Gwendoline Christie). But this will be remembered, correctly, for the Loot Train battle sequence, which was one of the most outstanding action sequences the show has ever done.

1. "The Book of Nora," 3.08 "The Leftovers" — Ending a show is never easy, but "The Leftovers" did it in an incredible, beautiful, and satisfying way. They made the episode a showcase for Justin Theroux's Kevin and Carrie Coon's Nora. And we got a beautiful happy ending that was unexpected. In what was an incredible season, this was the cherry on top.
