Upcoming Releases - March, 2018

March is usually an exciting month at the movies. We're well past the holiday season, awards season is wrapping up, and we're out of the dead period to start the year. While February offers a few notable releases, things really start to pick up in March. This year is no exception, as we'll see three of the most anticipated releases of the Spring pile up in a four-week span. Here's a look at what's coming to a theater near you in March!

Friday, March 2:
Death Wish
- This re-make of the Charles Bronson film stars Bruce Willis as a father, husband, and doctor who has to take matters into his own hands after criminals attack his family. Considering all the calls for curbing gun violence in our climate right now, this feels ill timed, and I'm not sure it's a movie that needed to be re-made.

Red Sparrow- Jennifer Lawrence takes the lead role as a Russian agent in this thriller. From the trailers, it kind of looks like a film aimed at "Americans" fans who want to know more about how Elizabeth Jennings got her training. I'm into it and have decently high hopes.

Friday, March 9:
A Wrinkle in Time
- Ava DuVernay takes on this classic novel, featuring a cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Oprah. This is a big budget film that Disney has put a lot of advertising and marketing muscle behind, and could be one of the biggest films of the Spring.

Gringo- David Oyelowo plays a mild-mannered American businessman who gets roped into a wild situation in this dark comedy that stars Charlize Theron and Joel Edgerton, among others. This could be a little bit of fun.

The Hurricane Heist- There are good movies, there are great movies, there are entertaining movies, then there are movies that are a trainwreck in the most entertaining way. I'm hoping "The Hurricane Heist," which is literally about a heist during a hurricane, falls into that latter category. The trailer is promising, and the idea is spectacular.

The Strangers: Prey at Night- Christina Hendricks leads the cast of this follow up to the horror film "The Strangers." It should provide a bit of counter-programming at a cheap price for the studio.

Friday, March 16:
Tomb Raider
- Alicia Vikander takes over as Lara Croft in this re-boot. The action sequences look decent, and I like Walton Goggins in a villain role. That's almost enough to make me forget that I don't think this film franchise should/needed to be rebooted.

Love, Simon- This is a teen romance with a twist. It's the story of Simon (Nick Robinson) coming out and finding his own great love story as a gay teen.

Flower- Zoey Deutch is a real wild child in this over-the-top dark comedy.

Friday, March 23:
Pacific Rim: Uprising
- This is a sequel to the original "Pacific Rim," featuring the same robots and monsters, but set in the future with a new generation of heroes. The first one was OK, but didn't have a lot of traction in the theaters. This second one feels a bit unnecessary, but I'm curious to see Scott Eastwood and John Boyega in it.

Midnight Sun- Another unconventional teen romance, this one following a girl who can't spend any time in the sun. These movies seem to come out in bunches year round, and they always make at least a modest impact at the Box Office.

Sherlock Gnomes- The follow up to "Gnomeo and Juliet," this one adds Johnny Depp at the titular detective, and looks like a bit of Spring Break fun for the kids.

Isle of Dogs- This stop-motion animated tale comes from Wes Anderson and features an incredible and all-star voice cast. The trailers are mildly amusing, but it's hard to tell if this will deliver on the potential of the cast and creative team.

Unsane- Claire Foy takes the lead in this Steven Soderbergh film about a woman who may or may not be going crazy. Just what we need for Spring Break...

Thursday, March 29:
Ready Player One
- Steven Spielberg helms this adaptation of the popular novel of the same name that has fans pumped. I was lukewarm on the early trailer, but the second wave of footage has me excited that this might be one of the highlights of the Spring.

Friday, March 30:
Acrimony
- March has a bunch of great movies, this isn't one of them. Taraji P. Henson, in her second stinker of 2018, plays a faithful wife who goes over the edge when she realizes her husband is cheating. Happy Easter everyone...
