Upcoming Releases — April, 2018

We're rolling into April and a funny thing happened — Summer's coming early. Instead of bowing in early May, as originally expected, "The Avengers" are coming to April. That's just one of a number of big releases coming this month as we transition away from Awards Season and toward a set of more populist films.

Friday, April 6:
Blockers — This comedy focuses on Ike Barinholz, Leslie Mann and John Cena — who play parents of teenage daughters determined to stop their Prom sex pact by any means possible. The trailer looks hilarious, and Cena is a secret comedy all star. I'm in.

The Quiet Place — This appears to be a unique horror concept, one that features a family living in a dystopic future where being quiet is the key to survival. John Krasinski stars and directs, and the cast includes Emily Blunt. There's been a big marketing campaign for this one, and I'm hoping it's worth the wait and hype.

Chappaquiddick — Even if you don't know all the details, most people are familiar with the incident where Ted Kennedy was behind the wheel, a woman died, and his career nearly went off the rails, taking the family legacy with it. This film seeks to explore those events in detail, and boasts a strong cast.

You Were Never Really Here — This drama, starring Joaquin Phoenix, hasn't really had much of a marketing push and I don't know much about it. The cast looks decent, and the premise seems interesting, but it's hard to tell.

The Miracle Season — Helen Hunt takes the lead in this story about a volleyball team that must rally after their star player dies unexpectedly. It looks pretty darn inspiring.

Friday, April 13:
Rampage — All you need to know is that the film stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a man who has to fight huge beasts. This is a straight forward action film, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan appears to be going full Negan in the villain role.

Blumhouse's Truth or Dare — Blumhouse has long been a purveyor of horror films, and now that comes with a bit of prestige after "Get Out" won an Oscar. "Truth or Dare" doesn't look like it's likely to be an Oscar winner, and might not even be great. But it was probably made on an affordable budget, has a cast led by Lucy Hale and will make a decent amount of money.

Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero — This animated tale is about a stray dog who became part of an American fighting unit during World War I. It's a little bit of family programming.

Friday, April 20:
Duck, Duck, Goose — This animated film is about a cantankerous goose (Jim Gaffigan) who finds himself shepherding a pair of ducklings and learning in the process. More family-friendly programming.

Super Troopers 2 — This is the long talked about sequel to the classic comedy "Super Troopers." It will likely appeal to hard-core fans.

Dolphins — Just in time for Earth Day, this new DisneyNature documentary is narrated by Owen Wilson.

Friday, April 27:
Avengers: Infinity War — One of the biggest films of summer, and possibly the biggest film of the year, opens a week early. This brings all the MCU together to battle Thanos. I'm all in.

I Feel Pretty — In a bit of counter programming, Amy Schumer's latest comedy opens, too. This one with a message about body image and body shaming.

Traffik — Omar Epps and Paula Patton get in over their heads in this action thriller.

Animal Crackers — Another animated film, this one featuring a voice cast that includes Emily Blunt, John Krasinski and Sylvester Stallone, that takes place at a run down circus.
