Summer Movie Preview, Part 1

We’re in mid-April, which means summer is nearly upon us. In fact, the Summer Movie season begins earlier than ever this year, with the first summer blockbuster jumping up into April. Over the next two Fridays, I’ll be giving you a preview of what’s to come in Summer, broken down into four easy to follow categories.

First is the blockbusters — the big budget films we’ve come to expect from our summer at the movies. Second is the trash action films — ones that have ridiculous concepts, a couple stars and blockbuster budgets. But these aren’t prestige action films. Those are the two categories I’ll look at today.

Next week I’ll tackle comedies, as Summer has become a great time for big comedies, and more serious dramatic films, which help to break up the long, hot summer.
But for today, it’s on to the big spectacle films this summer.

Blockbusters of Summer:

Avengers: Infinity War — April 27

This is the first big film of summer. It was originally scheduled for May 4, but pulled up to April 27, and it could be the highlight of the summer at that! The film features all the Avengers, plus the other big characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which is now 10 years old) coming together to battle Thanos. If you wanted to see the Guardians of the Galaxy fight alongside Iron Man and Captain America, you don’t have much longer to wait.

Deadpool 2 — May 18

The first Deadpool, which opened on Valentine’s Day weekend in 2016, set Box Office records, and became a fast favorite among fans. It was inevitable we’d get a sequel, and it makes sense that this big-budget sequel would move to the summer. I can’t wait to see this follow up, which will be the second major blockbuster in a row this summer to feature Josh Brolin. That’s right, 2018 is shaping up to be the summer of Brolin!

Solo: A Star Wars Story — May 25

I’m on the fence as to whether I’m excited about this. The production suffered a lot of problems, including seeing the directors replaced mid-shoot. But I like Ron Howard, and this cast includes Woody Harelson, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke. The trailer looks awesome and it is, after all, a Star Wars movie. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom — June 22

When Jurassic World debuted in 2015, I was skeptical. Jurassic Park is one of my favorite films of all time, and I didn’t see how it could live up to the hype. It did, and it was a movie I saw four times in the theater that summer. This sequel has my hyped, too, although it looks a lot more like The Lost World than one would like. Still, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard make a great on-screen team, and I would expect more of that in this sequel.

Mission Impossible: Fallout — July 27

Whether you love or hate Tom Cruise, you have to respect his career and his daring when it comes to doing stunts in big action films. Mission Impossible has been his signature franchise since it debuted in 1996, and with the exception of the second film, it’s been one of the most dependable and enjoyable action franchises around. I have loved all these films, and I can’t wait to see this sixth installment. My bet is it will be one of the most enjoyable and reliable films of summer.

Trash Action Films:

Skyscrapper — July 13

OK, this is pretty simple. It stars Dwayne Johnson and it’s an action film set in a crumbling skyscrapper. He’s already faced a deadly earthquake (San Andreas) and fought a genetically engineered gorilla (Rampage) so I think he can handle this. He’s an incredibly bankable action star and while this seems ridiculous, I can’t wait to be there with popcorn escaping the heat and being entertained.

The Meg — August 10

I love shark movies, and I won’t apologize for that. Jaws is an all time favorite, I’ve seen all the Sharknado films and I think Deep Blue Sea is an under-rated gem. So this new action blockbuster starring Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson featuring a prehistoric super shark looks incredible. How long until August 10?
