Upcoming Releases — June

We're turning the corner into June, meaning we've hit the meat of the summer movie season. Here's a look at what to expect as the days get longer and the temperatures get warmer.

Friday, June 1:
Adrift
— This latest film from Sam Claflin and Shailene Woodley is about a couple who try to sail a boat across the open ocean but hit a hurricane instead. It looks harrowing, and like the kind of deeper film we occasionally see in the summer.

Action Point — This action comedy starring Johnny Knoxville is about a local carnival that isn't exactly OSHA approved. This is a combination of scripted comedy and Knoxville's "Jackass" format.

Upgrade — Logan Marshall Green stars as a man who gets a boost from technology in this futuristic thriller. It looks a little strange and has slid under the radar a bit.

Friday, June 8:
Ocean's 8
— One of the biggest comedies of the summer, this is an expansion of the "Ocean's 11" world as Sandra Bullock stars as the sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney). In this one she puts together a crew to rob the Met Gala. This one looks like a fun, and funny, summer romp.

Hereditary— A staple of the summer is horror movies, and this one will likely fill the quota. It looks fairly creepy and also a little confusing. But it could be a good piece of alternative summer programming.

Hotel Artemis— This action film boasts an impressive cast that include Jodie Foster and Sterling K. Brown. And it has a fascinating premise. In a summer period that's usually full of a lot of loud, showy action films this might be a nice independent addition.

Friday, June 15:
Tag
— Every summer there are a few movies that get me pumped based on concept alone. "Tag" is one of those films. The idea of a group of friends playing a game of tag for years, and it being captured in this comedy has me pumped.

Incredibles 2— It's been more than a decade since the first film bowed, and the marketplace for superhero movies has changed a lot in that time. I will be curious to see how this film is received and works this time around. But this is doubtless one the kids (and parents) have circled.

Superfly— This is a "reimagined remake" of the 1970s film about a cocaine dealer trying to find a way out. Likely a piece of counter-programming for the summer.

Gotti— John Travolta takes the lead in this biopic about John Gotti. It's finally being released after being pushed from last fall. And it's still under-the-radar.

Friday, June 22:
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
— This is the movie of June, possibly of summer. It's the long awaited sequel to the 2015 film "Jurassic World," and it looks incredible.

Friday, June 29:
Sicario: Day of the Soldado
— The summer of Josh Brolin continues with this follow up to "Sicario." It features Brolin and Benico del Toro continuing the fight against the drug cartels, albeit without Emily Blunt. Still, this looks like a winner.

Uncle Drew— This summer comedy features a group of basketball players, including Kyrie Irving and Shaq, as old men trying to win a street basketball competition.

The Hustle— This one features Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as a pair of con artists. It feels like the type of comedy you get in spades during the summer.
