2018 Broncos' Season, Defensive Line Preview

We're just a few weeks from training camp, and about a month away from pre-season. so now is the time to start looking at this Broncos squad. In a series of pieces I'll be looking at each position group prior to the start of the pre-season. Today I'm looking at the defensive line.

Players: Derek Wolfe, Adam Gotsis, Domata Peko, DeMarcus Walker, Kyle Peko, Shelby Harris, Clinton McDonald, Zach Kerr, DeShawn Williams, Stansly Maponga, Antonio Simmons, Paul Boyette, Jr., and Caushaud Lyons

2018 Outlook: The Broncos' defensive line was one group that made a big step up in 2017, and that got somewhat lost. Despite it being a poor season overall, the Broncos' defense took a big step forward in containing and, often, dominating the opposing team's running game. That doesn't happen without greatly improved play on the defensive line. But like all positions, injuries began to take a toll as the season wore on. Still, Wolfe, Gotsis and Domata Peko really stepped up and helped solidify that unit. And there's some help this season as Walker, a second round pick last season that shifted to outside linebacker because of some injuries, goes back to his natural position. I'm excited to see him in the rotation, and see how that strengthens the depth of the unit. The Broncos also added McDonald, on a discount, who could help with depth. And, again, like all the other positions at this point there are many more guys in the room than can make the final roster, so who will step up?

Key Question: Can this unit stay healthy? Wolfe is a dominating player, and when he's missing the defense as a whole takes a step back. Wolfe had a serious injury in 2017, one that could have potentially ended his career. Can he have a strong, healthy season? Can Walker be a force in the mix? Can this unit pick up where they started 2017? If they can, this will be an under-rated heart of what promises to still be a very good defense.

Prediction: This is as tough a position group to handicap as any, and I think the Broncos keep seven guys here. My gut tells me right now that Wolfe, Gotsis, Walker, Domata Peko, Harris, Kerr and McDonald make the final roster.
